Hi & welcome.

Your post is already sitting in the very forum that's a veritable mountain of advice. And an even larger mountain of opinions !

Your challenge - start readng through the info right here, and decide what fits your needs best.

BTW - no chip will fit your PCM - you need a flash device ( via the OBDII port).

I'd stay clear of Hypertech & Jet - both of those are very suboptimal.

Also - add SCT to your list: http://www.sctflash.com/.

A great vendor, and a terrific custom tuner: http://www.troyerperformance.com/cgi-bin/ppistore.pl

Good luck. Ask questions anytime.

Oh yeah - BTW... if a dude named BlueJay tries to shovel any chit, y'all just ignore him, ok? He means well, but he's from Texas, y'know? lol.

Tuners ?

The sct, edge, and diablo are what the ford dealer suggests. They stock the diablo so they push it a little more. Mostly I would probably use the 3 preset tunes that some or most have I guess. Can you get the Troyer in canada? Besides the Troyer what would be the next best bang for your buck ?

Diablo - canned tunes are junk. A custom Diablo can yield good results, but you have to find a gifted tuner person.

Yes - you can order Mike Troyer's tuning from Canada (I did).

Next down the list would be either Edge or Superchips 18xx Flaspaq - both are canned tuners. Keep in mind though that they now cost as much as a custom-tuned SCT Xcal2.

[If you are asking next B-for-B that is not a tuning mod, I'd say an AF1 intake.]

Is the Troyer his own creation? Is it a module or a tuner type?
As far as the edge goes I understand you can disconect the box instead of running it on your dash? Is the edge internet updateable?

Hi Jamie;

Troyer Performance uses SCT's hardware and s/w tools, but the tunes are strictly Mike's own work.
You can get flash programmers ( e.g Xcal2) or chips ( e.g SCT6600); depends on your needs and vehicle.
Just drill down into the links provided above....

The Edge and SCT's flash device units are updateable.

I guess I am looking for what will give me the best results. I'm not a mechanic so I don't know if I want to start screwing with settings too much, I tend to wreck stuff alot... So if I was to get an Edge and use the canned tunes would I be disapointed ?????? I understand that SCT livewire has canned and custom tunes, but a guy at a shop I talked to yesterday claims the edge has better results and more noticable performance ? What do you think? I guess I just want something to plug in, turn on and drive that wakes the truck up.........

If that 'guy' was referring to SCT's canned tunes ( on a LW) versus the Edge, I'd ventire he *may* have a point. Versus TP's custom? He's dead wrong.

IF you want plug & play - an Xcal2 will fit the bill. No need to adjust anything. That stuff is done for you, in the custom tuning.

You already know my preference - I ain't gonna try & twist yer arm.

One thing, though - at least try & call TP - won't hurt a bit.

G'luck.

I just bought a hypertech tuner on ebay for my 05 and I am very happy with it. I got it for $180 and I think for that kind of money you can't beat it. I wanted it primarily to adjust my shift points and speedo after I put my lift and tires on. You can definitely notice a difference in power even on the low octane setting. There are a few used tuners on ebay all of the time. I say, save $170+ and get one of these.

I hear ya, and yes there are some good deals to be had.

But - you roll the dice buying a used tuner; some are not returned to stock, hence locked. Some need updating to support your vehicle, and some are just junk. A quick perusal of this site will confirm this.

Personally - I prefer not to play roulette with my truck's pcm. The cost of a tuner, brand new, is but a small fraction of the vehicle's price.

Glad it worked out for you, though.

Here is a Dyno Graph for an 07 F-150 with a Hypertech Max Energy. It picks up 25 HP and 40 TQ over stock.

Talking about the SCT XCAL 2, is it rocket surgery to custom tune it? Or do I have to find a good tuner to set me up with a good tune? So they set it up and I plug it in and that's it? It doesn't have canned tunes does it? So what you are saying is that the XCAL2 may be better than the edge for the same price?

Jamie;

It takes a lot of experience, testing, & talent to be at the top of the game tuning a platform as variable as the F150. So, while you could conceivably buy SCT's PRP package and attempt your own tuning, it's probably best to solicit the services of a professional, like TP for example.

The tuners are blank to start with.

Given the price parity - it's a no-brainer. True custom is as in-depth and vehicle-specific as you'll find.
