Enjoy the custom tunes! They are great. Try to keep your foot out of it though, your mileage will hurt.

Before you do that, keep in mind what the speed limiter is for. It has nothing to do with your acceleration speed, and was not set to keep you from having fun or getting tickets. The speed limiter is set for tire speed tolerances. Check out your tires to see what the safe speed is. If you've got older tires, reconsider pushing your truck's speedometer. A blow out at over 100 MPH is no fun at all. In addition, on a public road, pavement conditions vary and it is questionable as to whether your tread will provide the proper traction at those speeds. Race tracks have controlled conditions and people drive on racing tires. Public roads have potholes, loose gravel, moisture, bumps, oil, animals, debris, et cetera, and you are probably driving with light truck or off road tires that are not at 100 percent tread level. I've seen far too many people die in solo vehicle rollover collisions because their tires blew out or their tread wasn't capable of gripping the road.

10-4

I second that.

When your tunes give you so much more throttle response, you can't help but stomping down on the accelerator. Expect to see a drop in mileage until you learn to lighten your foot.

Sounds like you are either jealous, or scared, or both:
230 hp/ 270 ftlbtq v-6

And do you have a PA? I don't think so!

Also, don't forget that the speed limiter is designed for specific gear/tire combinations in order to prevent over-revving the driveshaft. Keep this in mind...

A standard F150 with 3.73 gears and 275/65-18 tires has a driveshaft speed of about 3840 RPM at the 96 MPH speed limit. With 4.10 gears and the same tires, you'll see about 4220 RPM at the 96 MPH speed limit. Go with a lower profile tire (275/55-18) and that number jumps to around 4100 and 4500 (3.73 and 4.10) at 96 MPH.

I don't have any specific numbers regarding recommended driveshaft speeds but there are some improtant facts to consider that weigh heavily on maximum recommended RPMs.
  • Driveshaft Length
  • Driveshaft Angle
  • Output Torque at a given RPM
Steep driveshaft angles (like a 6" lifted 4x4) can blow a u-joint at relatively low RPMs, even as low as 4500 RPM while shallow driveshaft angles (like a Mustang) can run up to 10,000 RPM or more. Add to that the fact that truck driveshafts are much longer than most car driveshafts and you will see increased stresses on the u-joints, both angular and torsional. Also, longer driveshafts have a higher possibility for vibration which further stresses u-joints.

Anyway... As a general rule, unless you are in a controlled environment, it is not a good idea to exceed the maximum vehicle speed limit. Oh... and always wear your seatbelt.

It's probably a good thing for everyone who ordered their custom tunes. I guess he's getting caught up finally.
