How do tuners work?

I'm a newbie to mods and was curious how tuners/chips work and try and get some recommendations.

I have a 2008 Ford F-150 4x4 Lariat Supercrew w/K&N CAI. Im looking at many mods and I wanted to get some information on tuners/chips.

Easy! You search this forum. Wait, now we will have ANOTHER irrelevant topic come up while searching. If the MODS were smart they would make a sticky for this kind of stuff, as we all see how much this happens.
