Arrow So we've done Canned Tunes Vs. Custom tunes but what about

So now I know I should have went with a custom tune when I started.:o

Now what could I expect if I switched from my Superchips canned tunes to a Custom tune?

I already have spent the $400 on a tuner so I would have to spend another $500 or so on a custom tune now.

Worth it?

Or should I just live with the canned tunes untill I get a supercharger. (which will probabaly be years from now. 3 years + I would say.)

Could you sell the Superchip and then purchase an Xcal2, Edge or Gryphon? Only out the difference.

The superchip's get locked into the VIN code. I don't think they can be used again. Although I have heard about some unlocked versions. Maybe someone knows how to unlock them.??

Ya all my friends with 150's were unhappy to know this.

They thought I would be able to tune all their trucks too!

Being an off the shelf product, I thought it was like the Edge. Limited to one vehicle at a time.

Superchips can be resold. As long as you return the tuned truck back to stock. I let my uncle use my Flashpaq 1815 when he goes on trips. I have no problem switching it between the two trucks. I plan on selling my SC Flashpaq 1815 after I buy an AF1 intake. I just hope SC doesn't lower the price on the unit anymore. When I got mine it cost me $415 and that was a steal at the time. Now you can get one for $379? I wonder how much a used one is worth? I just wish I knew about this site and the custom tuning options available before I made the purchase. I hope this helps you knowing that you can return it to stock and sell it.

All you have to do is return the vehicle to stock and than it's unlocked. Sell it. Order a Xcal2 or Xcal3 from VMP Tuning which will run you $400. Than you'll spend $50 on a new tune for the supercharger when the time comes. Easy stuff ...

Question for you, How happy were you when you programmed your truck with the canned tunes??
You should be equally pleased with custom tunes, compared to canned tunes, compared to stock.
and since you do plan on adding a supercharger I'm almost positive you'll want a custom tuner that can have custom files written for your supercharger.

SOOoooo.....The bottom line is you need to ask "YOURSELF" if its worth it!
and "DO NOT ASK WHICH TUNER"

There is hours upon days of reading material in this forum, so sit back and enjoy!

Thanks for all the info guys!

I didn't know that it unlocked when I returned my truck to stock. Obviously Superchips dosen't advertise this info.

I guess I'll have to add this to my MOD list after the headers!

Don't worry Phatboyspam I've been around long enought to know not to open the Tuner wars quesiton again.

I decided a long time ago which tuner I would use if I ever went custom.

1 question. Is the 1815 the tuner used on the 04-08 5.4's also? I have a friend with a 07 F-150 that would love to try out the tunes.

Thanks

Yes it will work for his truck. the 1815 works on gasoline engine 99-08 F-Series, 04-08 Rangers & 99-06 SUVs. Anyone know what a used 1815 should be worth?

Crappy. Oh well, the tuner has gotten a little better in the last few weeks. Looks like I'll be keeping it.
