That is what I would do. I have the 87 and 93 performance tunes.

Maybe - but a better question is what is your cost per mile?

Most people on this forum say you'll get better mpg using a 93 performance tune. They're probably right, but, the cost per gallon of 93 octane gas is more than what you pay for 87 octane.

So, you have to calculate the cost of using 93 octane gas to drive say, 300 miles versus the cost of using 87 octane gas and driving the same distance.

Which one costs you less? That's the one you want to use.

well I would have to know a MPG number to be able to do that, and that would mean getting the 93 to see what my truck will do....at least thats how I see it...

I will muddy things a little. I had the Edge, got 11% better mileage on Level 3 than 2, so it paid for teh difference in cost and performed MUCH better. I stayed on Level 3. I got 2 custom tunes. The 93 is a little better than the 87 performance, but not drastically. The 87 is dang good. Yet, the 93 on my truck gets no better mileage than the 87. The same tunes on Stealth'struck gets better mileage on the 93. Bill said if I sent it back, he would look at it, but I'm fine with it. I run 87 most of the time now with the cost so high. Just when I want to feel more kick, I will run a tank of 93.

Of course! That's the problem isn't it? You might be able to get a sense of the reward by trying a canned tune vs the results you had with an 87 octane canned tune. I suspect the results will be similar to what you'd get with an 87 custom tune vs a 93 custom tune.

The problem is, none of us can really answer this question for you. Your truck and driving habits are different than ours. What works for you may not work for us and vice versa. There are no absolute answers here.

Sorry we can't really be more helpful. I know I'm not willing to try the 91 octane tune (that's the best gas we can get here) to see if it's better (in terms of dollars) than my 87 tune.

Cost per mile depends on price per gallon, which is different at every service station and always changing.

Yup! An additional variable. My take on it is to use the high octane tune if you want to have fun and don't mind the cost.
