Programmer opinions

Looking at a couple different Hypertech programmers for fairly reasonable.

most people on here run edge or gryphon it seems but i'm lookin for affordable gains without harming anything. All i have done is exhaust and thats all i really plan on for mods. just considering doing a programmer for a little extra umph. any feedback?

Your statement could be taken to mean that you think the Edge or Gryphon harms your truck. If you think that, it just is not true. I don't think anything gives you more for your money than a Gryphon from PHP, with it's custom tunes. I have had the Edge and now the Gryphon tunes.

I have an 04 supercrew with the 5.4, its not that i think they hurt your truck but you always hear horror stories... and ppl talking on here bout wierd noises and what not.

I like the looks of the gryphon and edge with the mounting pod but thats a lot of money too... and i'm just not convinced i need one. I know everyone says they wouldn't drive without it once they get it but its just hard when you havent driven with someone who has one.

I put about 35,000 on my truck with the Edge and now about 12,000 with the Gryphon update. I have had the pod out once in that time, to download the Gryphon programs, and driving it without a programmer and the gauges was frustrating. If mine failed today, I would be ordring a new one.

As far as noises, I suspect those people would have noises with any programmer, including Hypertech. If you can pick up a used Hypertech cheap, then that may be all that you need to be happy, and that's fine. IKnowing what I know, I would never be happy without a Gryphon.

What are the the canned tunes on a gryphon like?

I'm just looking at all options here and I know a lot of people say custom are the way to go. Are the custom tunes a lot different then the canned ones? I'm guessing yes. I use my truck to drive back and forth to work and hunt with, pulling a load every once in awhile and just here that tuners are a big plus. Just trying to help convince myself that i need one

The canned tunes in the Gryphon are the same as the canned tunes in the Edge, Bill wrote them for Edge. They are written per a corporation's requests, and are good, but still leave a lot to be desired. Having said that, I was very pleased with the canned tunes in the Edge for a considerable time. I use my truck as a daily driver, 77,000 miles in 3 1/2 years. I do a lot of freeway and two lane highway driving where quick acceleration and good shifting, downshifting is important. I used the canned Edge Performance tune with 93 octane most of the time. I seldom tow, and the towing tune has great low end torque, but fades rapidly at highway speeds. Eventually< I ordered the custom tunes even though my truck is stock. The Gryphon custom tunes are fantastic. The 87 Performance is as strong or stronger than the Level 3 Performance tune from Edge and the downsfiting is fantastic. I kept the Edge towing tune and got an 87 Performance and a 93 Performance tune from PHP.

One other thing, the customer service from PHP is as good as it gets.

Does php have a site? Can you buy, say an edge from them with the tunes in ready to go?

The Gryphon (a rebranded Edge that PHP sells) comes with three "canned" tunes loaded. In your case though, they might not play nicely with your truck since you have an intake mod. You really need Bill's custom tunes with that or you risk running lean.

I imagine you could use the Level 1 canned tune though without worries, since all it really does is firm up your shifts.

Their website is www.PHPTune.com.

It is not an Edge, exactly, but, it's the same hardware and it comes with the same canned tunes and is called the Gryphon. It's black instead of grey, like the Edge, and it comes with the option of ordering custom tunes. Due to CAFE rules, the Edge can not be custom tuned.

and from my understanding and what i have read on here if you are considering the edge you might just as well buy the gryphon so you can customize it later.

i just need some money to fall into my lap to make it easier.

Is anyone on here seeing good mpg gains under normal driving with the gryphon?
