Octane for custom tunes
So it looks like I'll be buying a Gryphon with custom tunes. I want a tune for performance and for towing. The question I have is, if I get the 93 octane tunes, will my fuel economy increase at all over the 87 octane tunes to offset the extra cost of the gas, or will the only benefit be the increased power and are there any benefits to the high octane other than power, and depending on your answers fuel economy?

Yes, no, maybe.
Here is my experience. Had the Edge and got about 11% better mileage out of 93 on Level 3 than I did 87 on Level 2. Since Level 3 was more to my liking anyway, I ran it all the time. I converted to the Gryphon custom tunes, got an 87 Perf and a 93 Perf. The custom 87 Perf is as good as the 93 canned tune from Edge, so it does all I need. The 93 Perf tune is some stroger, but does not get ant better mpg than my 87 Perf, so I now run the 87 Perf all the time. It's fantastic. Now, Stealth on here, has basically the same truck I have, 4x2 Screw, 5.4 with 3.55 gears. We got almost identical mpg with the Edge canned programs, yet he gets better mpg out of the 93 Perf tune as compared to the 87 Perf tune. Enough so, he runs 93 all the time.
Bill has offered to take a look at my info and my 93 tune to see if he can tweak it, but I am so happy with the 87 Perf tune, I just didn't want to mess with it. I will occasionally run the 93 for kicks, but not often. There is no advantage to running 93 or 91 over 87 other than increased power, and that only happens if you are tuned for it. Hope this helps some.

You won't really know till you try. What is the difference in cost per gallon between 93 and 87? What is your mpg increase between 93 and 87? And finally, which costs less? (You see I'm simply answering your question by asking it of you).
No two trucks behave the same. Gas from two different stations can give different results. Bluejay is happy with his 87 tune. I'm happy with my 87 tunes too. The truck was really designed to burn 87, so that's what I'm putting in it.

It all depends on the price per gallon of gas. Different octane levels could be anywhere from $0.20 to $0.50 difference. In today's gas market, the price difference could be up to 20% or more. You will not get a 20% increase in mileage. But I can remember just a few months ago, when regular was @ $4.80 & premium went just over $5.00, then the price difference was just about 5%. My cost per mile went down. I did get at least a 5% increase in fuel savings. Remember that at an average of 15 MPG, 1.5 MPG is 10%.
But think of it like this: you are spending the same amount of $ for your custom tune, why spend that money for a lesser powered tune? You get more bang for your buck by getting a tune for a higher octane which produces more power.
Enjoy your new tune. You'll be glad you did it.
