Don't they give you canned tunes and then email you the custom tunes later? How long was it from the purchase date to getting the custom tunes emailed to you?

I was one of the fortunate few that got the Edge custom tuned. This was before Edge worked an agreement with PHP. So, all I did was tell Bill what I wanted, gave him my credit card and recieved the tunes right back. Only a hand full of customed tuned Edges exist!

As I was reading this, I recall Mike Troyer's explanation for wait times:

Excellent question, and we certainly understand the basic question of why the wait - it's for several reasons.

A lot of people want our tunes of course, but volume is not even the major reason these past couple of months. Since the X3 came out with it's canned tunes, we took advantage of the fact that you have tunes you can use right away to do some additional R&D on the new 2008's, as well as new fuel mileage tunes, doing testing at high altitudes and some other driveability work - and of course, doing more R&D to deal with the ever-changing fuel quality. So it is the continual ongoing R&D that is required for us to continue to be able to deliver the best possible tuning on each and every one of the *hundreds* of different strategies in these F-150's each and every model year alone. So it is *not* just 20-30 different revisions, every model year of the F-150 has *hundreds* of PCM revisions and we tune for each of them as required. I wish we could do them all the same, but we do not compromise, our reputation is built on our *quality*. Yes, when we have vehicles of the exact same strategy, model year, configuration *and* modifications in a short period of time, then *those* tunes do indeed go quicker, sure! But that is not the norm overall due to the hundreds of different PCM revisions, people have different modifications, fuel quality is vastly different from one area to another, etc. I could go on, but I think you get my point. Those of you who have come here get a chance to see in person these detailed things we talk about, and so they get a chance to really understand that a bit better - the rest quite naturally, wonder why because they do not get directly exposed to that - perfectly natural.

Another point is the fact that even among say, 2004, 2005, 2006 F-150's that we have done so many times - we do not just do one round of R&D and then stay static, we are constantly doing more & more R&D to keep up with fuel quality, make further gains in various areas, driveability improvements or doing things in different ways, power in a certain area of part of the throttle range, the recent vast amount of R&D we just did in our fuel-mileage tunes, how we control the transmission, and dealing with ever-changing fuel quality - that's a real biggie.

Yes, trust me, we *know* how this sounds to some - but nobody else does the thorough calibration work that we do specifically in F-150's. For those who care about getting the best, they do understand and want the very best possible, and that is why they come to us - and we cannot let them down, our quality must stay first and foremost, and thanks to the X3 now available, recent orders have tunes right away until they get our custom tunes.

Another example are the 2008's - due to how long the leftover 2007 sales went on getting 08 5.4 3V's in quantity took longer, so while our basic new model year R&D was pretty much done, we wanted to do further detailed work like we normally do over time, & this model year that extra R&D took longer. So there are actually many reasons why - however, for those with X3's, which is the vast majority for the past 6 weeks or so now and from now on, you have tunes you can use right away until you get your custom tunes!

Since we started using the X3's, we took a few weeks to do a few more R&D projects in the interest of making sure that you get the best possible tuning in each vehicle, so we did a few major R&D projects that we really hadn't scheduled. We also worked with a number of vehicle owners on a couple of aspects at high altitude, and we'd like to thank them for their help in doing that testing with us - as well as doing testing in some other areas with other owners, too.

Another example of why continuing R&D is required is that fuel quality is an issue, over the past 5 years the trend has been downward in terms of fuel quality (energy content), more ethanol content, etc., and this varies so much over this continent - it takes continuing work on many different configurations with different types of modifications to really stay on top of this to deliver the level of tuning that our customers have grown accustomed to from us.

So those are some of the kinds of things that really affect this overall - it's how we stay on top year after year, it's just what we do. Now that we have much of the major additional R&D we wanted to do done for now, these times will drop back down to a more reasonable time frame -

When it comes to custom tunes the key word is "patience" no matter who you order them from. For the most part, most seem to be happy with what they got. Btw, 7 weeks for me from Troyer and couldn't be happier. I love my custom tunes. Hell, I'd wait 12 weeks if I had to, these tunes are jammin'

Troyer = 10-12 week (can't remember exactly)

VMP = < 1 week.

With the VMP though all I was waiting on was for him to email me the tunes, already had the Xcal II. I am very happy with the setup of both tunes although I did have to have Justin do some adjustments.

This is from VMP right?? If it is, his order will say that until the tunes are ready, then it ships out and he sends the tunes.
