Question about tunes

What is the best/most common tunes that are sought after, for example: 87 Perfomance Tune, 89 Tow Tune.

Im looking into getting a tuner from VMP with custom tunes, and I have no clue what would be the best type of 3 tunes to get, I have a 4.6L 04 F-150, and sometimes I tow a boat, but other than that Id enjoy having the performance and gas mileage out of a tune.

Sorry for being vague on most of my details, but I was just curious as to what most people choose for tunes for their octane/tune, I dont really understand the complete difference.

Thanks.

well I got a 87 performance tune, just because I would rather not use premium and pay the extra for it. But I know some have found that they get better gas mileage with the 91,93 octane and can run it at the same cost. But I left the other canned tunes alone.

I ordered the 87 perf and a 87 tow perf. Left the other slot alone for future use.

I kept the 87 Tow tune that came with the Edge and bought an 87 Perf and a 93 Perf. I use the 87 Perf most of the time.

I have the 87 performance, 93 performance, and 87 economy tune from Justin @ VMP.

93 Performance was the first tune I tried and haven't switched except once to try the 87 Performance.

Soon as the fuel was real low, I immediately switched back to 93 and it's been there since.

I really had no use for the others and haven't even tried the economy tune.

And except for a little weight in the bed, I haven't towed anything.

I use the 87 Performance tune most of the time as well. I also have the 91 performance tune, no 93 in Cal These trucks really run good on the higher octane.

You know, realistically, 87 and performance should be two seperate things...why skimp on the octane if you want more ponies? Seriously to, I'm not trying to start a debacle. You gotta pay if you wanna play, pony up the extra 20 cent a gallon and git'r done

I'm happy with the 87 Performance tune. It delivers about what the canned level 3 did and saves 30 cents a gallon. I have the 93 Perf and for most of my driving, I just don't need the little more that it delivers. My 87 Perf tune paid for both of my custom tunes in about 6 months.

I have always order 87 performance, 93 performance and 93 tow.
I almost always run 93 performance though. The 87 is just in case I can't get 93 octane somewhere, or if I were feeling super cheap (never happened yet).

You will be satisfied with Justins tunes, have had my 87 perf, 87 tow and 87 mileage since december and would never like to go back to stock. FYI if your concerned about towing your boat Justin says all of his tunes are tow safe, but if you are that concerned just get one of his tow tunes. I leave mine in performance even when towing my 4000 pound boat, tows just fine and the trans does not hunt like it used to with the stock tune. However when I take long trips (few hours on the highway) I plan on switching to the tow tune just because it will hold the TC locked in overdrive a bit longer than the perf tune.

Thank you all for the input, and I'm psyched to find out how the truck will respond with the new tunes, I asked for 89 Tow and Performance. What exactly is the biggest difference between the Performance tunes and the ones labeled Mileage, because some of the descriptions I've read still make the performance tune sound like the best one to pick because it still "appears" to get the same mileage.

That's a nice sized boat also NVERL8, Im usually towing a 1400lb boat, not too big but gets the job done, so my truck should be great with the new tunes Im assuming then, cause as of now it acts like nothings behind it when towing.

Someone may correct me if i'm wrong, but a large percentage of the difference is the timing advance on the higher octane.

The only reason not to run a 93 octane tune if you're running a custom tuned vehicle, is simply that 93 octane isn't available to you. I mean seriously, we don't pay between 300-600 (random numbers, price varies by tuners) bucks to drive like miss daisy. I paid mike troyer to tune my truck to haul ***, and he did, and I got every last dimes worth. I got 93 street, 93 ***** out, and bad gas tunes. I've never put the tuner on it since day one, 93 ***** out. I still get 17mpg highway

That is fine if that makes you happy. I don't drive that way all the time and I am quite happy with the 87 performance tune. Just put 600 miles on it the last couple of days and ran 75 to 80 a good bit of the time. It was running great and had all the power I needed.

This is the reason I only run 93. I wouldn't go out spending lots of money to try and gain 1mpg. I did it for performance
