Tuners and towing

I have a 02 FX4 with a 5.4L, I tow a 19' boat allot, the truck only has 76,000 miles, well maintained. Pondering upon a Tuner from Troyer, the Superchips custom tunes. I talked to them and they could set up one with 3 custom tunes, standard driving, towing, and another.

So if you tow and have a Tuner. Let me know what you think?

I've heard the Gryphon is a better deal and PHP will custom tune for any mods (exhaust, CAI, tires, etc.).

PHP has their own forum. You may want to ask users their opinion.

I tow a boat that weighs around 5,000 pounds and I got the tuner just for that, not that the truck wouldnt handle it I just wanted the better shifting but got increased power as a bonus. My truck will now solidly pull my boat down the highway without shifting in and out of overdrive going up small grades.

My recomendation is Justing at www.VMPtuning.com however as I am sure you will read both PHP (Gryphon) and Troyer both seem to be very good tuners as well. Whatever your choice I am sure if you go with any of these three you will be satisfied.

I got the gryphon and tow every day during the week. I have the 93 and 87 tow tune and a 87 perf tune. The 93 is night and day better than the 87 performnace wise however the milage difference between the two might be .5 to .75 better, I was hoping it would be higher with the 93. I wish I would have got the 93 performance to switch back and forth between from week to weekend, so thats why I'm running 87 so I can switch back and forth from week to weekend when I'm not pulling my 4k trailer.

Always leave mine in towing. A noticable difference in power in the performance setting but I prefer the shift strategy of the tow tune. As far as improvements over stock.
1.Power
2.Throttle response
3.Shifting
4.Gas mileage

with tow tune, power, part throttle tq increase=shifting, don't need to leave od off- it will not go into od based on shift characteristics unless flat and motor isn't taxed

I have a gryphon and have had an edge. Overall, the canned tunes on the gryphon are far better than the edge.

but, if your planning on gettin custom tunes, id go xcal3. the php wait times are awful and the lack of communication sucks
