Gryphon or evolution??

Hello all, excuse my ignorance to the tuners. I am seriously looking at ordering a tuner this weekend for my 02 king ranch. Am I understanding that the evolution is incapable of receiving custom tunes? Is the gryphon the way to go if you want more than canned tunes? I am looking to get rid of the lag in response to throttle and am not 100% sure that this can be done with canned tunes. I also have some minor ( Very Minor) performance upgrades on my truck, exhaust and intake, and am curious would it be better to go with custom tunes to accomodate these changes. Thanks folks.

P.S. I know how to use the search function, but still am not getting all the answers I am looking for. But I am sure someone will link them....

They use the same hardware and come with similar canned tunes. The canned tunes are for stock engines. To take advantage of the intake you have, you really need a custom tune. Actually, custom tunes are the way to go, even on a stock engine like mine. Much better. Many Edge owners have sent their units in to be converted to the Gryphon so they can get custom tunes. Do yourself a favor and go with a custom tuned Gryphon.

Do it right the first time and get a Gryphon. I had an Edge because I got it for a great price when it was on sale. I am now upgraded to a Gryphon and awaiting my custom tune. Either one will get rid of the lag but to be safe with your intake, get the Gryphon and some custom tunes.

I'll add that since you have a 2002 truck, if you are looking at a Gryphon/Edge type device, I'd get one of the new CS or CTS devices. The older Edge/Gryphon Evolution model seems to have some weaknesses in the OBDII cable that connects it to your truck. PHP has stopped selling Gryphons for pre-04 trucks, but they WILL upgrade the Edge Evolutions for them for now.

There are, of course other devices such as ones from SCT or DiabloSport. Any of these should get rid of the "lag" you speak of. The Edge/Gryphon devices add additional gauge displays.

Thanks for the help guys. Gryphon with custom tunes it is. And I was leaning more towards the cs. JackandJanet, when you say they stopped selling the gryphons for my year truck, will that include the cs? Is the cs not a gryphon? Sorry for so many questions guys.

It's confusing, isn't it? When PHP sells a CS or a CTS, they DO call it a Gryphon CS/CTS. But there are differences between these and the older "Evolution" models that go beyond mere "aesthetics". The CS or the CTS IS being sold by PHP for your model truck (they might still have a "sale" going on)?

PHP has simply stopped selling pre-04 "monochrome" screen model Gryphons, that are really "converted" Edge Evolutions.

Just installed my gryphon about an hour ago, loaded the 87 tow tune. When i drove it the first 20 feet out of the driveway i could tell there was going to be a difference. Got it on the road and dang, not bad for a 87 canned tow tune! Love the way it shifts/downshifts compared to stock too.

Got my Gryphon the 13th of this month and have been all smiles since. The ability to monitor the trans temp and many many other things has been nice. The install was fast and very easy. The menu and all functions are straight forward to use.
The power is just amazing. I am waiting for my custom 87 performance and 93 tow tunes so I have been running the canned tow tune. My 110,000 mile truck has come to life and feels like a new rig now. When I step on the go pedal RPM's jump with out hesitation and away I go. The throttle lag is gone and the trans and engine seem to stay right in the right place as far as the power band goes.
The difference has been so amazing with the canned tune I simply cant wait to get my custom tunes so that my intake and cat back can be taken full advantage of.
Get the Gryphon and you will be happy, the ability to get custom tunes and the outstanding ability of bill makes it an easy call

Since the search function is down...whats the difference between a CS and an edge? Whats the price difference between adding custom tunes to a stock edge and buying a Gryphon CS from the start?

From what I understand, and someone will correct me if I am wrong, the edge is a monochrome tuner with cammed tunes. The cs is a gryphon color screen tuner that comes with canned tunes but is capable of being custom tuned for performance modifications or tire size changes you have made to your vehicle. From the word on here, straight to the gryphon with custom tunes is the way to go. Also, they have had problems with the edge on our year vehicle, something with the truck reading it due to the connection at the obdII input.

Not to sure about sending in a edge for tunes, but I believe the it's cheaper to just start with the cs. go to powerhungry.com and you can read through their FAQ's

thanks campo, I skimmed through it earlier but i'll check it out again. I had always thought the Gryphon Edge was just like sending in an Xcal to VMP or troyer. Anyone know if the CS mounts like an edge?
