2010 with VMP sct x3 question
#16
Im def curious about this as well. The funny thing is I contacted Brenspeed (known reputable mustang tuner) and he basically told me the same thing. They were saying they dont have the ability to mess with the trans. I wonder where these guys are getting their info because thats 2 known tuners saying the same thing. Hopefully someone will chime in and clear up all this confusion. Also maybe someone can shed some light on this noise/surge that some are having.
If they can, and they DO .... well I'd be digging deeper if I wuz y'all
Where to start - get all the numbers/addys of the tuners on this site ( readily available) and CONTACT 'EM ALL. Heck, go the SCT's site and post a question on their custom tuning Software suite's capabilities. Call them TOO.
My take? It's somewhere between lack of will, or lack of experience - again on the specific platform we are discussing right here only.
Good luck I stop here. Mebbe you can coerce Shotgunz to do the legwork for y'all. He be right gullible
**** LAST BUT NOT LEAST *** If any of you think I'm barking up the wrong tree here, tell me NOW, and I'll STOP.

Im not saying they cant tune the trans, im just relaying what I heard. I was told from Brenspeed they can go in and make changes to the engine tune but cant do the trans. Im just wondering where these 2 guys are getting their info. If PHP says the trans can be tuned I will take his word on it. Just because the tuner is saying trans dowloading really doesnt mean anything. It could just be uploading and downloading the the stock tune. So please dont say it can just because the screen on the programmer says something. Again im not saying it can not be done Im just confused why some tuners are being mislead down the wrong road.
I think we are digging deeper as well, were the only ones who have inquired about tuners not from PHP, VMP, and Troyer. It just appears that the people we have been contacting are confused about what can and cant be done .

Besides, Smoke described a change in the tranny behaviour, so changes were made to his TCM.
I stand on my opinion, lol.
And - thanks for keeping it civil!

Always!! I just really want to know all I can about these trucks. I like to call around and see what everyone has to say. Sometimes its good info and sometimes its not. Im going to quit cluttering up this thread . Ill check it later and see what came up.

Y'all remember Bill's initial 2009 Dyno results thread?
Here's an excerpt fotm that - says it all:

Galaxy,
No worries on the AFR thing. It happens to the best of us!
This was done through actual tuning of the ECM. We took the stock calibration and applied much of the same tuning we would use on the earlier F-150. We are finishing up the firmware and will have the calibrations available on the Evolution and Gryphon platforms in the next couple weeks.
As for the separate ECM/TCM, it's not a big deal at all. The 6.0L diesel has had the same setup for years and we already know how to handle that. In fact, even the 6.4L and later Expeditions use the 2 module setup. I'm not all that familiar with the Dodge setup, but from what I understand this certainly is much easier to deal with.
Now, one comment on the CAI/AFR thing... The reason a CAI will often cause a lean condition is because the shape and/or diameter of the metering or "sample" area of the intake tube is usually quite different from stock. This change will have a significant effect on the way the Mass Airflow (MAF) Sensor calculates the airflow into the engine. The larger the intake tube, the lower the air velocity through the tube, and consequently through the sampling port of the MAF. This results in a lower output from the MAF which the computer interprets as less air mass entering the engine and in turn cause the computer to inject less fuel. You can guess the rest from here. Since removing the snorkel does not change the sampling area of the intake tube, there is no adverse effect on final AFR.
Enjoy.

You give up too esily. And - it's YOU I'm trying to assist among others ...

YOu would not upload the TCM if you were just going to replace it with the same stock file. Since it's seperate, if you were not going to modify it, you would simply not touch it at all - far less risk that way.
Besides, Smoke described a change in the tranny behaviour, so changes were made to his TCM.

Sometimes, in certain gears, I can give it some more go pedal and feel the truck move out without downshifting... and it's strong and like there is alot more power in there. So, I give it more, and it still doesn't downshift but pulls like crazy. The stock tranny would never do that... it would immediatly downshift.

Thanks Smoke.
Well there's really no way to sugar-coat this, so I'm not even going to attempt to any longer....
To my mind, I sincerely wonder why JL would tell a customer something that obviously is not true. To be blunt - to Lie.
Telling someone you don't know how (but am going to learn) versus you can't ("because it's an Xcal3") is Massively different. And the former would be utterly acceptable.
Makes you wonder. Well, me, anyway.
Bottom line - a custom tune without addressing the tranny (in an auto vehicle), is, simply put, Incomplete.
For me - I now know one thing - JL will NEVER get any of my business.
Just IMHO, only. But - there can't be this many glaring discrepencies (as I summarized earlier) for me to be comfortable with this shop. Not now.
MGD out. I'm done here.
Gonna go find some and relax. J&J, BJ, "88", Shotgunz, come join me - my treat

I suspect, everyone, that the separate ECM/TCM design is going to effect tuners that are not used to this configuration. I guess if it were me, I'd stick with the ones who know how to do the job.
I'm sitting here with a martini, MGD, that's about as close as I can get to joining you.

A performance tune should give you more power across the board, not just at highway speeds. But, it would be less protective of the engine if you were engaged in "heavy stress" activity like towing.

Anyone know if you can and how you would adjust the torque converter specs on the x3? I haven't had the chance to experiment with mine much yet.
Incidentally it was doing that very same thing between 50-60mph. Holding steady at 1500 rpm but sounding like it was surging(exhaust drone coming on then off). Is this something that would damage the transmission?
