VMP SCT issue?

I was just recieved my SCT tuner from VMP with 3 custom tunes on it. I went to load my tunes ( have a battery tender on the battery) and the last time i checked it was up to 89% loaded. The next time i went back to check it says '1017 Upload Stock Failed' I went to SCT's website and it says i have to check the firmware version...wtf....are you serious? So I paid for a unit to be customized and ready to go, and the firmware isnt up to date? Has anyone else run into this? So what do i do now? the tuners plugged in still, do i just disconnect it? match up firmware versions?

Thanks Shotgunz....i already e-mailed Justin, and left him a voice mail too. The forum was actually my 3rd help line since SCT is closed on weekends too.

Okay - wasn't sure if you had already tried to contact Justin.

I don't have an XCAL3, so this is just a guess.

Based on the error message (and SCT's direction), it sounds like the XCAL3 couldn't save your stock calibration. This is likely caused by the XCAL3 not supporting your factory calibration (needs a firmware update).

Since it couldn't save your factory calibration, it hasn't (or shouldn't have) changed the PCM and TCM programs and your truck should still be stock.

I would disconnect it from your truck and wait until I heard from Justin (you should make sure your truck starts).

If you can't wait, I would disconnect from the truck; make sure the truck starts; connect it to your computer; attempt a firmware update; and then try to flash your truck again.

Please let us know how this turns out (and Justin's response to your valid question about needing a firmware update).

One more question. How did Justin write custom tunes without your hex code?

Here's another unsatisfied customer.

After about 2 weeks of emails, and limited responses I finally got *some* of my money back.

I never got money back for custom tunes that never worked, or money for the rush order I placed. I also did not get a refund on shipping (I understand this part), and I only got 85% of the tuner price back. So, out of a $500 tuner, I only got $310 back from a custom tuner that NEVER worked ( custom tunes would only keep tranny in 1st gear), and the canned mpg tune would only muster a pathetic 10 mpg on a 100 mi test drive with an average of 60 mph. The 100 mi. on the canned tune (which was only one that would work at all) is the only time the tuner has been used on my truck. So I paid ~$2 a mi to get 10 mpg.

I wasn't going post anything more on this thread and keep my issue to my self, but after the email I recieved today from the tuner, I could really care less as it was clearly evident that the tuner did not read very many of my emails about my problem and what I had already tried.

Basically I was accused of simply buying the tuner and trying only the custom tunes and putting it back in the box for a refund. I have been trying to resolve this since mid October. My emails clearly stated I tried all tunes, including ones emailed me. It was also a flat out miracle to get a response to my emails in a timely fashion...a response should not take days. I guess I was supposed to continue dumping in tunes that "may" work or use the 10 mpg canned tune, and just be happy about it.

Anyway, sorry for the vent. I would be cautious of buying anything from VMP tuning over the net.

I'm sure that they do a good job if you have your truck on their dyno and can set the tuner up while you watch as you would have their undivided attention....I would not reccomend any emailed "custom" tunes from them if you are like me and won't drive 20 hours one way just to have your truck put on a dyno.

Thanks again Shotgunz!

You are correct! it looks like the SCT could not save my stock tune, therefore not going any further, and not removing the stock tune from the vehicle. I was able to start the truck, which is good news! I looked at the SCT firmware version and its up to date per SCT's own website, so i dont think thats the issue.

I still havent heard back from him, I'm just glad that my trucks not a sitting brick at the moment!

I gave him my 4 digit PCM code, i figured he wrote semi-custom tunes from this code until I supplied my full stratagey code

I've talked to Justin via emails a few times and always got a fairly prompted response. He like all the other tuners are very busy but I hope he gets to fixing your tune asap.

There may be problems with the 2010s that all the bugs are not worked out yet who knows.

I had the issue and you need to run the latest firmware to work. As per my tuner and SCT. I'd double check yourself for kicks but was the exact issue I had.

I recall when I got my SCT tuner the instructions said in big bold letters that the first thing you should do is make sure the firmware is updated.

if you haven't updated your firmware, then it's operator error not tuner error

User error? hmmm....i dont think so since the unit came with firmware version 1.2.123 already installed, and according to SCT's own website the most current firmware is 1.2.123

If SCT came out with a update, they would change the firmware number....thats how firmwares work. If they decided to change something within the same firmware and not change the number, that really doenst give me the warm and fuzzies.

Secondly, if buying from a Custom tuner, you'd think that the unit would be 100% upto date to run with the current vehicle which you bought it for, and listed on the tuner sheet.... IMO

I'm going to update the firmware from SCT's website and basically use the same firmware that shows currently on my unit, but maybe that will fix something.
