Problems with buying a used programer with custom tunes?

I've seen a couple of programers in the classifieds with custom tunes.

First off would and SCTX3 from VMP with 87perf, 87tow ect. work on my truck?
When looking at VMP's web site it asks for the hex code. The way I understand it is that every truck has a different code. Now if the tuner was writen for one hex code would it work on a different one?

I guess its the same question for the Gryphon from PHP.

Any help would be appreciated!!!

Every truck does not have a different code, there are batches with the same code. You are correct tho, the tune is worthless unless you have the same code but also, need to have the same mods if the tune was written mod specific.

The mod specific part I kinda knew about, or at least figured. I just wasn't sure about the hex code part of it.

So the chances of a mid build year 06' having the same hex code of a 07' probably aren't real good.
My truck is stock for now, and don't realy have any plans of doing anything to it except maybe a tuner. This is my first vehicle with the whole electronic throttle b.s. and I'm not a real big fan of the throttle respose.

Ok, your HEX is almost assuredly not going to be the same usless you both had a reflash at the dealer about the same time. Then it is possible. On the Mod specific, he could have been running a CAI of some brand and his tune wrtiien for that, where you would have a stock intake. Would not work well. If you can buy the hardware cheap enough, you can still come out ahead by ordering tunes from one of the tuners to download on your hardware. If you pay too much, you might as well buy a new one. A custom tune is definitely the way to go, even with no other mods.
