Hypertech Tuner causing dieseling or pinging
Question for anyone out there. I bought the Hypertech 42003 Max Energy Power Programmer for my 2010 F-150 with 5.4l 3v V8. When I program the performace engine tuning, it does increase the power. However, it also causes a dieseling/pinging sound from about 2500-3500 RPM range. Their tech support told me to 1) update the programmer online 2) try a different or higher octane (87 is what I used). None of these changes helped and I wanted to know if anyone out there has experienced this too? It's too late for me to return it, so thats out of the question.

Good news, I hope. Back in April I had emailed their tech support and they were unable to help me with the problem. I emailed them again yesterday and received and email back acknowledging that other owners too having complained about the pinging issues on the newer Fords and they were looking into a resolution. They had me connect my programmer via the update software to send them its configuration. They are suppose to contact me within a week for a firmware update. Hope this works, I will post when I know more.

I have the same exact problem with my 09. Mine pings even without the tuner but is definitely more noticeable with it installed. Taking back to the dealer today to have them take another look at the truck. Hypertech did numerous revisions to my tuner to try and help the problem but with no success.

My 2010 is having the same issue with multiple revisions of my SCT tunes by different tuners. We have retarded the tuning to basically nothing. I have another one to try today so my fingers are crossed.
Will upgrading the firmware of the SCT-X3 tuner possibly have a positive effect on this problem? I upgraded mine today but haven't tried it yet.

Not seeing much of a performance change after Hypertech made adjustments to the programming after the pinging issue. Seems to accelerate slower from 3500-5500 RMP rather than stock. I'm putting the stock setting back on for now aside from using the other mods for Shift points and engine RPM limit changes. Hopefully they will continue to test and update their product. I am curious how much HP & Lb Torque are claimed after the resent firmware change?
