2013 5.0L About Ready To Order SCT X3

Just a little back ground. I have been around the F-150 performance world for a long time. Mostly the Lightning world, so i have learned about many different tuners. With that being said, who should i go to?

Torrie @ Unleashed
Mike @ 5*Star
JL @ JLP Performance
JJ @ Woodbine Motorsports

My opinions of them based off the last few weeks. I have been fighting a issue with my NAV being off because of the larger than stock tires. I "THINK" its due to the Dead Reckoning system on the 2013s(SCT, SCT Tuners, Ford, Ford IVT Team, Sync, or Dealer can confirm). With that being said i called many tuners and asked for there help to figure this out. Without going into many details

Torrie, was willing to work with me. If it dont work send back for a full refund.

Mike, wasnt as willing to work with me and said if it didnt work there would be up to a 30% restocking fee

JL, never could get in touch with him to ask.

JJ, was just as willing to work with me at Torrie was.

I was really disappointed with the way Mike handled it. Manly for the reason that if he worked with me and it fixed my issue i was going to order TWO X3s. One for me and one for a friend that is having the same issue as I.

JJ and Torrie both won me over by there willness to help but i also understand they dont have the long testing that 5 Star has which is why i keep going back to him. Just had that bad taste in my mouth you know.

So with that being said, what woudl you do?

Have you tried MPT? They have a presence on this forum and give a forum discount.

i would but the issue is that the tuners I know and trust are all well known L and HD tuners and aren't "well known" for the new 5.0L.

Mike has a lot of experience with the 5.0 and I would not expect him to work for nothing if I ended up sending it back. All the risk would be on him, so I would not have a problem with the restocking fee.

Wayne,

For many the NAV issue has turned into a non issue. My 2013 F-150 Platinum was having issues with losing me on the map. I found on another forum that several things can be done to fix this issue. The one the worked for me was unhooking the battery for about 10 mins. This reset my entire truck and since then the NAV has been 100% on. A few other folks have had to had the GPS module replaced on their truck and the last few needed an update from Ford to their truck.

Not sure if you have already tried the battery trick however it fixed many peoples NAV issues, including mine. I put aftermarket wheels and tires on my truck 200 mins after taking delivery. I am running 22" with 305/40R22s. My Platinum came with 20s.

I have disconnected my battery when installing my HID fog lights and the NAV is still having the issue.

I have not brought it to the dealer but my friend has brought his truck to the dealer 4 times so far and the dealer keeps telling him tire tire tire. I know 2 other people with 2013s with larger than stock tires and we all are having this issue.

From the research i have done the tires are the cause. Just waiting for Ford to come out with a fix or confirming that the SCT will fix it.

In other words, the GPS is not overriding the dead reckoning?

It appears so!

We/I have called Ford, SYNC, Ford IVT Team, SCT, 6 Tuners that use SCT and all say tires shouldnt affect the GPS bring to the dealer.

It seams that Ford is just passing the buck.

My friend brought it to the dealer 4 times and they say tires(After doing 3 different TSB). He has even gone as far to contact the engineer(Brian Petersen) that was credited for the design of the Dead Reckoning system for Ford and that email got pushed off to someone else, then to someone else that asked for his vin. Then he got a call from the dealer saying "we got a complaint from Ford saying we didnt help your issue" He said that is correct. The dealership replied " We told you its your tires, we installed stock tires drove around and it was fix, installed your tires back and its screwed up now".

So basically the email to the engineer ended back to the damn dealership which is where we started!

So what is it? Is the GPS override broken? Tires?

Tires will not affect a GPS but they sure will affect dead reckoning. I am GUESSING that correcting the PCM for tire size will fix it, and I don't see why the dealer can't do that without a programmer. They should be able to correct for any axle ratio and tire size that was available from the factory, and it seems to me one of those combinations will be "close enough for government work".

I am GUESSING that a tune with corrected tire size will fix it to but its a 450 gamble.

Yes, i guess i have been saying that the tires are throwing off the GPS. Let me rework that. The tires throw off the dead reckoning which in turns throws off the NAV.

For both trucks in question:

1. Year, model, engine, 2wd or 4wd
2. Gear ratio
3. Stock tire size
4. New tire size

Both of you can simply go get the PCM flashed for a 3.73 axle ratio and probably be close enough. I worked numbers for RPM/axle ratio/tire size for 70 mph with stock tires. Yours would work out to 69 and his would work out to 72 if you do just that correction. Without any correction, you are at 73 and he is at 75. If the dealer plays stupid, find another one.
