Question Chip or programmer?

Does anybody have any info on availability of Hypertech programmer for a 2000 with a 5.4?

Also, if I was to go with a Superchip, will it correct my speedometer for increased tire size?

What's a flip chip?

Sorry about all the questions but this computer business makes my brain hurt.

Hi rtroha,

For information on availability of the Hypertech Power Programmer unit for specfic models, we would suggest touching base with Roger Lemere, whose company runs the F-150 Online Store. His number is 916-361-2510, Lemere Enterprises is the name of their company, and they can tell you exact model availability on that part.

To answer some of your other questions and make a few comments, here goes............

The Superchip can correct for gear ratio & tire size changes in most of these 1999 & 2000 F-150's, it's a custom program, so we'll need to go over your exact changes with you.

The Hypertech unit can make some corrections for tire size, it has a limited range of adjustment, + or - 1.5 inches variance in height from the original tire size.

An important difference betwwen Hypertech & Superchips is that Hypertech only does "generic' programs for these vehicles, for example, one program for all 1998 4.6 automatic F-150's, whereas with the Superchip, you get a program that was made specifically for *your* individual truck. This makes quite a difference in the quality of the results, as the Superchip program is made specifically for *your* truck, instead of being compromised to run on all similar vehicles. These vehicles can have hundreds of different software revisions in their powertrain computers each model year, and the only way to properly optimize the powertrain program to do each one individually as we do. It requries far more R&D work, but that is what it takes to get the best optimization of your powertrain program.

Some of the other differences between the Hypertech & the Superchip are that the Hypertech unit will not tune the engine and add power all the time at all throttle positions like the Superchip will, the Hypertech unit adds power primarily on full-throttle, where there are no emissions standards that have to be met, and that yields a poor performance gain in everyday driving.

The Superchip works *all* the time, adding more power not only at any rpm from 1000 rpm on up, but more importantly, at *any* throttle position, so you'll have about 10%-12% more power available all the time, in any situation, from light throttle to full-throttle and everything in between.

You also do not need to use an abnormally cold thermostat with the Superchip, as most Hypertech applications require.

The Flip Chip that you asked about is our 2-program Superchip Flip Chip. It is a device that allows you to have 2 completely separate programs, and allows you to select which program you're running on by flipping the attached switch.

This Flip Chip is used primarily by those who need custom programming (like for your speedometer calibration, for example), or those who want to have the abilty to run on both 87 and 91+ octane fuels. Performance chips require the use of premium gas, that is how the additional power is made, by re-tuning the engine specifically for the use of premium gas. When we do a Flip Chip in an 87 & 91+ octane combination, the power gains on the 87 octane program will be small, 3-5 horsepower or so, but you will still have all the other benefits as well, such as removal of all the transitional delays & retards, better automatic transmission shifting, etc. So the vehicle will still accelerate a bit quicker and the powertrain will be more responsive on that optimized 87 octane program, and then when you want maximum power, just fill it up with premium and flip the switch.

Don't worry about asking questions, that's the only way you find out what you need to know.

Question

Mike -

When using a Flip Chip, where does the switch live? What kind of a switch is used? Does it come with the chip?

Hi Prostartjh,

The switch goes wherever you want to mount it, basically, and yes, it comes with the Flip Chip.

The 2-position toggle switch is attached to the Superchip Flip Chip module by a 2-3 foot long lead, so you can mount it where you want. Most people mount it on the little tab that is just under the dash on the passenger side close to the computer, or in the glove compartment. Some have extended that lead and mounted the switch in the ashtray, in custom overhead consoles, and some even under the hood.

Where you mount the switch is completely up to you!
