The "numbers"

The "numbers"
Why does the SuperChips web site claim 15hp and 22ftlbs and the Perfomance Products order page claims 25 and 31(4.2L)?
I have been studying all of the info on these forums and my head is spinning! I have no idea what to do. Some claim the Diablo is better, some the SuperChip.
I tow a 3000lb Aero Cub TT with a 2wd 4.2 5-speed...I need to give my poor drivetrain some kind of help. I've ruled out exhaust and was about to order a chip. After reading this forum...I'm torn. Some say there were little or no improvements while the other half rave of i'ts performance.
Can anyone answer the question at the header of my post?
Maybe that will help with my descision.
Signed,
confused!!!

Hi Confused
Maybe Mike T. will see your post? He would know. If you dont qet reply try repost ? for Mike T.
Easy to get confused, but.. Superchip does make a difference.
If someone says no improvement at all...i would be curious too about that....why not? Usually theres a simply answer/fix.
I read everything on this bd. before i got schip. from MikeT. Perf.P. It does make a difference and you will feel that difference. Because we're all different...each feels the increase a certain way..and will describe it a certain way. Lots of variables...driver/truck/engine/gears etc.
If you can get similiar gains for less $, obviously thats the way to go. Of course..big GAINS...big $$$. I think schip is best bang for the $.
Good luck...OT

Well, I'm not giong to try and make you think that I have the numbers you are looking for. I can say that the Superchip does in fact work. There are others that can attest to it as well. We might not have people who are posting about towing gains, which you might be looking for. Neal, who responded earlier was able to reduce a good amount off his quarter mile time with the Superchip. I was recently down in Virgina for the F150 Online/Performance Products rally and I was able to drop seven tenths off my quarter mile time simply by flipping the chip (Superchip flip chip) to the more agressive program. There is no other explaination other than the more agressive side of the chip is optimized for better performance.
Like Old Timer said, there are many different people using chips. I think it's important to remember how much you pay in relation to the gains. If you look at your alternatives, you may find something that will give you substantial gains, but the price is quite a bit more than the Superchip.
If you expect three thousand dollars worth of gain from a product that costs a tenth of that you will probably be dissapointed.
The Superchip will help you to tow, but you are starting with the 4.2 (and the 5-speed to boot). That may not be the best set up for towing. I think you are pretty close to the maximum towing capacity.
If your not in the position to trade up and you don't have the funds to go for the big power mods the Superchip should be right up your ally.
Give Mike a call. He's a great guy and will let you know what your options are to get your truck going like you want it to.

Yes, as I was aware of the towing limitaions of the truck, 3300lb, I purchased a trailer that would have a travel weight of less than the tow rating...and boy did I cut it close. The truck certainly works hard to pull it, but is by no means over taxed(the 3.55's help alot of course).
At first, I expected the worst with the v6 5speed, but was pleasantly suprised at how well it does.
I am now confident, due to a positive response from the "experts", that the chip will at least make me feel better that I am doing all I can for my truck.
Thanks guys!
Now if they would only accept Discover Card...I'd be in!

Hi SSL1996,
Actually, we DO take all 4 major credit cards, VISA, M/C, Discover & AMEX. If you're having a problem with that in our online ordering system, we'll have the Webmaster check into that to see what's up, that'll probably take a few days.
In that online system, you can enter your correct credit card info, the number, expiration date, billing address, etc., info, and we'll know what kind of card it is by the first digit, 3 is AMEX, 4 is VISA, and so on, so we'll know instantly by that first digit if you use a Discover card, which we're happy to accept. In other words, (and it's been years so I don't remember as I should) if it's only allowing you choices between VISA & M/C, just pick one & enter your Discover card number & other info anyway, and we'll know that it's a Discover card by it's first digit.
There is also a small text box in the ordering system where you can leave us a short message (careful, it doesn't screen-wrap, so you'll have to use hard returns to start a new line, or the info will scroll off the screen & we won't see it) and let us know it's a Discover card, if you like.
If you are having a problem in our online system that prevents you from placing the order there, or if you would just feel more comfortable doing this over the phone, please just give us a quick call & we'll take care of it for you that way.
The bottom line is, don't worry, we take all 4 major credit cards so you can make your purchase on the card you choose to, if you want to get your Discover card cash-back awards, for example.
To answer your question about the different numbers you see listed for the power gains, what Neal posted is correct. As he mentioned in his post (he was the first one to spot this when Superchips updated their site some time ago & called us right away), there are a few errors in there made by whoever had to transpose all those numbers, a few of the Fords, a couple of GM's, etc. The original figures for the late-model F-150's with the 4.2 V-6 are 25 hp & 31 lbs./ft. of torque for the maximum potential gain from the Superchip. That is rated SAE Net at the flywheel, just like your factory stock power rating is. In the real world, most people running it on a good chassis dyno see somewhere in the neighboorhood of 15-19 horsepower **at the rear wheels** from the Superchip for the 4.2 V-6. 16 HP at the rear wheels is roughly about 20 hp at the flywheel.
The bottom line in terms of what the Superchip will do for your F-150 is roughly a 10% power gain in terms of the horsepower, and about 13%-15% more torque. While you'll pick up more power at any throttle position or rpm, you'll also notice that the characteristic of being weak below 2500 rpm that those V-6's have will be helpd by the Superchip as well.
If you have any questions on this, just give us a call & we'll go over this with you.
