Picking Mike's mind!

Ok well I'm stuck on something. I was thinking of getting a superchip but then I found the power programer that is made by Hypertech which reprograms the ECM.
I know I would probly benifit more performance wise with a superchip. Do you know if the power programer would help with a superchip or am I ask for trouble? Remember I have the OBDII.
Would there even be anything I could adjust with the reprogrammer on a superchip?
I asked Hypertech this same question but they of course gave me the good ol'e "This product will reprogram anything to your specifics blah blah blah..." basically they gave me useless info.
I know I can get an honest opinion from you seeing your post over the last few months.
Thanks

I have heard

On another sight that Superchip is actually making a power programmer now and it is either for sale or about to be for sale. I think there is actually a group buy on this product at www.fordtruckworld.com...check it out

Hi Sprocket!

Well, it's no secret that you'll get much better performance gains from the Superchip tuning than from Hypertech.

With the Superchip, the powertrain program is made for *your* specific vehicle, and it works tuning the engine for maximum horsepower and torque *all* the time, at any throttle position or rpm.

With the Hypertech tuning, you only get 1 program compromised to run on all similar vehicles (for example, only 1 same program for all 2001 5.4 F-150's). Also, Hypertech only changes engine tuning during extremely heavy to wide-open throttle, the rest of the time it does nothing to increase engine power output at all, they only tune where there are no emissions standards that have to be met. I can't tell you how many times they have actually claimed that it is *illegal* to change tuning on part-throttle, but the actual fact is that we do indeed change tuning everywhere except at idle, and we're still 50-state emissions certified, Superchips is the only company in the world that offers that.

The Hypertech unit can, at best, get about a 4-6 hp gain on those 4.9 6-bangers, and at worst can actually cost you a 3-5 hp loss. With the Superchip for the 4.9 inline 6, you'll get a solid 15 hp & 31 lbs./ft. of torque gain, and regardless of throtle position or rpm, you'll always have about 10% more power on tap, so no matter how you drive the vehicle, you'll always have more power.

If I understand your question correctly, no, there is no Hypertech or any other kind of unit that can change anything in the Superchip's programming or tuning with the Superchip installed in the vehicle, so no, you cannot use the Hypertech unit to modify anything in the Superchip. The Hypertech unit can't communicate with the PCM with a performance chip installed, as the J3 circuit in the Ford PCM is activated, at which point you cannot write to the PCM via OBD-II, nor can you write to anything connected to J3, it's doesn't work like that. Nothing can write to the J3 connector while a performance chip is attached, and Hypertech should have told you that very clearly. If they didn't, then whoever you spoke to either doesn't know much about Ford EEC-V operations or perhaps misunderstood your question.

Our recommendation is to either use the Superchip for that Big 6 or don't do *anything* to the PCM (powertrain control module), as there really isn't anything else worth having. No other chipmaker is doing really good powertrain programming/tuning on those engines and that R&D stopped long ago, as Ford cancelled that engine's production about 7 years ago.

If you have any questions on this, give us a call at our number listed below & we'll go over all of this with you.

Dude you rock. Hypertech's customer service sucks, so they already lost my interest. Thanks a lot.

I'm glad we were able to provide you with some info, if we can be of help, just give us a call.

Good luck with your truck, & keep that Big 6 alive, it's nice to see them being cared for.
