Getting codes manually?

I know you can take it to AutoZone for free but is there anyway to get the code manually? My truck gave me some vibrations during the drive home and then flashed the check engine light for awhile, now it stays on. I know my other vehicles offered the flashing codes if you toggled the ignition a few times. Tried it a few times but with no results. I don't even know how to decode the flashes at this point.
Maybe someone can help me?

1997 F-150, 4.6 Liter.

For ALL 1996 and later vehicles, you must use an OBD-II scanner (or equivalent) to extract all codes from the PCM.
