Exhaust cutout switch install ?'s
hey all, just a few questions for the sparky's of the bunch. i just got my Quick Time Performance Electric Cutout, QTEC, in the other day. it has instructions, but i am no electrician. it says in the instructions this...
"-connect the red wire (it has a fuse on it) to a switched 12 volt source. some choices of power are traction control (pink wire on LS1 camaro/firebirds) or run it to a switch fuse in the fuse panel....make sure you choose a source that is off when the key is removed and the car is shut off....blah blah blah...-connect the black wire to a good ground. one choice is drilling a hole in the chassis and screwing the wire to the chassis. another location is the black wire on your cigarette lighter. regardless of where you find your ground, ensure that it is a good ground source or the unit will not work properly."
the switch itself is a toggle switch, with three wires coming from it. one red, which it fused, and one black. it also has a black and red together with a "AC/DC plug" style connector to it, which plugs into a long gray wire which belongs to the motor assembly. my questions are...
1. what would be a good power source?
2. what is a good ground?
3. what is a butt splice?
4. where could i run my wire through to the cut out motor and the switch?
the website is www.quicktimeperformance.com/QTEC/, so you could get a better look at the unit that i have. any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks brothers and sisters, willie

I don't know exactley but try these...
Depending on how big of a fuse it needs the radio is a good switched power in the fuse panel. I dont know if you have seen or if it comes with a fuse tap. But I would use one, it just slides in to the fuse place then your fuse plugs into it and it leaves a tab (Male Spade connector) for a female spade connector to be put on it.
Anywhere on the chasis. I ussally don't drill a new hole to ground add ons. You can ussally find a bolt somewhere close to remove, put your wire on and replace it.
There should be a rubber gromet on the firewall close to the top directly above the steering column and to the left of your brake booster. Mine use already in use when I got the truck. But if yours is not then cut/drill a small hole in it with a screw driver, knife, or small drill bit for the wires to pass through. If you have to make the hole then Make it smaller than the wires. It is better to have the wires make the hole as big as they need it to be and let it keep a tight seal around them.
I hope some of this helps.... Good luck and keep us updated....

thanks for the help. my 'puter has been acting like a two year old the last few days so i am sorry for the late reply. although i talked to a muffler shop and he said that the cut out won't really do to much as far as sound goes. so i will keep this page in mind when i finally figure out what to do with it, thanks again, willie

Well an old man I use to work with had some on his El' Camino and when he opened them up it was definatley LOUDER!
But he did have a problem with them not wanting to close and seal all the way, but they were older mechanical cut outs too. Big difference in cheaper mechanical and nicer electrical like you have. Stacy on trucks endorsed a set of Electrical Cut outs a few weeks ago and he stated that when you opened it up it was...
In my best Stacy voice with his mischivious laugh.
Unbeliveably Looudddd!!!
