Does your 86 have the high mount stop light? If so, does it work?

If you have it and it works, the problem would be in the multi-function switch.

If you don't have the high mount stop lamp, it still might be the MFS.

I don't think an 86 HAS a multifunction switch. I believe an 86 still had a dedicated turn signal switch.

Without seeing the schematics, I can't say, but 20 minutes with a test light should make the problem readily obvious.
