Question Advice needed for '97 SuperCab exhaust

I have a '97 F150 Supercab with a 4.6 V8 and a single exhaust forward of the aft wheel (no, my rims are not discolored...yet). I would like to get a Flowmaster with dual rear outs but would like to know what would be best to use with my particular engine. Any suggestions? 70 series? 40 series? It would be nice to have some exhaust rumble, but I don't want anything that would be annoyingly loud. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

-Mike

P.S. Would it be better to get a cat back system or just a muffler/tailpipe kit?

Belay my last! After reading the previous posts, it appears that a dual out FM is out of my current budget. Would a 40 series single-in/out sound good (at city and highway speeds) and help performance? Would just a muffler and tailpipe do it or do I need more mods? TIA for any info.

DD,

I have the flowmaster 40s, it has a slight purr at idle, and has some good growls while shifting (it's a 5spd). All thanks to Tina, the original owner

Though I can't speak to the performance without it, the beast (as it's called) is chipped, filtered, and has the flowmaster so it will get up and go

I had straight pipes put on mine the other day and I think that is the best way to go especially for the reason that it is cheap. It sounds twice as good as my cat-back system and its not much louder after it hits 3rd gear, but if you want to hear it step on the gas and people will know you're coming.

I love the flowmaster exhaust sound personally! I have a 3 chamber ForceII kit on my 90GT stang and it is great! Fit and everything was perfect.

But for the F150, they do not have a lot of choices for them. From reading the board for about 6 months, it seems the Jardine system is the way to go. Sounds like it will give you the best flow and power and at only like $200 it is hard to beat!

Rock, Spartan, and MATT90GT, thanks for the input. I've narrowed it down to either the Flowmaster 40 or Jardine cat back (hope the prices are still discounted!). Actually, I think I may be leaning towards the Jardine for economy and performance. At any rate, thanks again for the help.

Cool

I have the FlowMaster 40 single in / single out running out of the factory pipes and it sounds great. Nice rumble at low RPM's, very mean sound at WOT. I am very pleased because I wanted everybody else to be able to hear me, but I did not want the cab resonance to be overbearing. FM40's are a good choice.

My truck is just like yours. I have Flowmaster Delta Flow 50 Series on my truck. I had the tailpipe increased to 3". Single in and single out. Really nice deep rumble at idle and a nice loud but not anoying through out acceleration. I selected the 50 series because I didn't want to have a really loud sound but I wanted to be heard coming down the road. Nice power gains from bottom end to WOT. You can see pictures of my truck from link in my signature.

Hey Islandboy (and others),
Thanks for the reply. BTW, our two trucks share a lot of the same features (although mine is not a Lariat). I'm definitely going with a single-in/out setup, but I need to get some more background on the flowmasters. 50 or 40 series sound pretty good, but I think my performance wishes will be met only after I change the air filter and perhaps add a chip. I'll keep you posted.

Mike,

Have you checked out Flowmaster's website. www.flowmastermuffler.com
They answered a lot of my questions about their systems.
