Exhaust smell...How do CATs work?
Could a smelly exhaust (rotten eggs) be caused by anything other than the CAT's themselves? Does it mean the CAT is bad? Clogged? What? I don't understand how CATs work, and what makes them smell. Can anyone please explain? TIA!!!

I put a reply in the engine section, but anyways cats very rarly fail on there own, they generaly only fail due to a falure of another componet, for exaple overfueling and engine missfire cause cats to overheat and to melt down ( egg smell caused by incorrect air/fuel ratio )
cats contain platinum, rhodium and pladium which create a chemical reaction thus changing HC, CO, NoX emmissions into carbon dioxide and water vapour ( humans breathe out carbon dioxide and water vapour )so if you see a vehicle with water dripping or runing out of the tail pipe it is a good indication of a well running engine and an equally well function exuast emissions system
