ALLFORD, What type of gas are you using the best mileage I've ever gotten from my truck is around 18 mpg on a trip back from Las Vegas and I didn't hit any traffic. Although I've always use 87 octane and occasionally put in 89 octane when towing heavy loads I have never gotten any better mileage. After reading some posts I am considering switching to 92 octane and getting a Superchip. I figured it out on a calculator the other day and if I get 2mpg better that should almost pay for the chip in a year, even though premium gas is .20 more per gallon here.

WHITEFLIGHT, I use Shell most of the time. I also use Speedway, I think this company has 5 names it goes by.
Texaco,Amoco and Citgo are what the superchip dealer said to try but that it can vary by location.
BP is the only gas I've been told to stay away from.

MJVAUGHAN: I'm gonna hafta raise the BS flag here.. Increased weight and traction increase MPG??? How? Unless you are spinning your tires for 100 feet from every stop, I just don't see it happening.

Handling, braking yea... but MPG? No way. I think everyone here would have 1000 lbs of plate steel in their bed if it would increase MPG.

BTW, my truck gets about 13.8 MPG every time. 60% highway at 75mph, 40% city.

I think we have stolen this thread..
Sorry gcnappa

ALLFORD, Thanks for the reply but I was wondering what brand, I seen posts saying anything but Exxon, but in different areas some brands are not available. 76 is very prevailent in this area I don't even pass an Exxon in my normal travels and only know of 2 Texaco stations within 30 miles. On my route to work (12.5 miles) I pass 6-76, 3-Chevron, 3-Mobil, 2-Arco, and 1 texaco station. 90% of the time I use 76 because ther are more of them and I have one of their credit cards, and for some reason they are usually the cheapest. Any input on which gas gets better mileage would be welcome.

Lightbulb

Maybe he lives in the panhandle where they have all them thar tornadoes, or in the gulf where they get them hurricanes, them big winds come and lift yor truck and y'all don't get no traction.

Jokes done loose the 3.08's I have 3.55's and I feel I'm lugging the truck in OD unless I'm doing 75mph 3.73' should do it unless you are running really tall tires.

WHITEFLIGHT made the point that I was trying to. The truck will free up at the higher rpm. The 3.73 or 4.10 gears are going to do the most for towing and could even help city gas mileage. The truck is not going to lug the way it did with 3.08 gears.
