Question should i get 2 1/2" or 3"??

went to the local muffler place, they told me a magnaflow muffler si/so with a tip would run me about $250, and i could go either 2 1/2" or 3" for the same price. should i stay with the 2 1/2", or would 3" be better? i want to keep as much torque as possible.

thanks!

Which engine do you have? How good are the bends going to be over the axle? I would probably go with 3" the 5.4L, maybe a 3" with the 4.6L if the shop does a poor job of designing the hump over the axle, or a 2.5" if they are good. Actually, if you are going with aluminized anyway (which you must be based on the price), I recommend getting the Magnaflow mandrel-bent one. #15004 3" for the 5.4L or #15019 2.5" (I'd call to verify that 15019 is the right side) piece for the 4.6L. $50 shipped for a very good piece that your shop could do for about the same price, but I bet the bends are worse.

sorry, i forgot to mention it is a 5.4, and i forgot to ask the guy at the shop if it was mandrel bent or what, i assume it is not. hmmm, you mentioned just buying the piece from magnaflow, that makes me wonder....i have a buddy that works at midas, maybe i could just buy the parts and have him do it cheaper than this place would? i will have to check that out.

thanks for the replies! anyone else?

Actually does anybody know if those Magnaflow pre-bent pipes will clear a class 3 hitch/receiver? Got one from the factory on the back of my truck and it seems to take up a decent amount of space. I also couldn't find any dimensional info on those tailpipes either. Thanks,

Mike

Cool

Spaceman Spiff,

JMO and only based on what I did to my setup, but I'd go with the 3" single exhaust. Mine seemed to respond very well to this and I do tow a #4500 travel trailer, so low end is most important to me as well.

I've not towed with my new "Flo Pro" yet, but my 'seat of the pants meter' is telling me that I've got even more low end now.

packager_jr,

Can't say for sure on the Magnaflow mandral bent tail pipe, but the Gibson fits on mine. It's close to the spare tire and the rear shock. Don't think it even comes close to the hitch.....

But then, mine exits behind the rear tire. If you are going straight out the back, then the hitch could come into play, but if it's a quality system, then it 'should' clear. No idea why the Gibson dual setup won't allow you to use the spare...... Pretty dumb if you ask me.

The only thing you need to consider is if you go about widening out your exhaust you are going to lose quite abit of low end power.
