Question Cut off pipes

I have a 97 F150 with the 5.4 liter, I also have flowmaster si/do muffler with pipes exiting out the rear. I was wondering what it would sound like if I were to cut off the pipes at the muffler. Would it be louder or what? Also is it legal? Any help is appreciated.

It would be louder in the cab, about the same outside. Turndowns would reflect the sound more.

Each state is a little bit different, but I think most states require that the exhaust exit a certain distance from the back of the passenger compartment. Some do require the exit to be to the side or back.

I would definitely check with local authorities, because here in California(the most strict rules known to man), turndowns are legal.
