Question True duals with no mufflers?

If I were to have my "Y" pipe cut out, and true dual "turn-downs" installed, would I pretty much have to run mufflers to keep from losing too much back-pressure? I assume I would have to have an "H" pipe at that point? How is the "H" pipe fabricated and how much usually? What size pipes would I need to run after the cuts? Would 2 1/2" be "OK" or would I have to go down to 2 1/4"? Lastly, would this make a difference in sound / performance? Thanks!!!
