lbzryder,
I've run straight pipes for years. I've had them on this truck for almost 5 with no problems.
The 4 cats on these trucks really cut the noise down, but on a v-6 I wouldn't want the sound. You really need to find a muffler with a healthier note, and that will keep some pressure in the system.
Most people I know that have cut the muffler on a 6 go back to one pretty quick.
Good luck,
Rich

I am my brother both own F150's with the 4.2L V6. We both have the Flowmaster 40 series SIDO on our trucks. The sound is suprisingly nice IMO. Compared to other options on the V6, i think the Flowmaster 40 is the best choice as far as sound goes. My brother got his muffler and install for $200 at the local muffler shop. He got 3" SS tips w/ the "fat lips" and ran the piping straight out the back. His sound is a little lounder since I only got 2.25" SS tips and ran mine out in front of the rear passenger tire. I got a really good dead on my install since to muffler shop took nearly 5 hours to install the muffler. I got the muffler and install for $140. Not a bad deal.

exit on exhaust
I have a 4.2 v6 with a 40 series muffler on it. At the moment i have my exhaust exiting behind the rear wheel. i went back to the muffler shop and asked him to put it in front of the rear wheel and the guy told me that if i did that it would make my chrome wheels turn blue or basically become discolored from the heat of the exhaust. is this true? i didn't think that was right because the lightnings have the exhaust exiting on the side in front of the rear wheel? should i go somewhere else and have it done? please help me out.

Here is a suggestion. In my family we have had vehicles with completely custom exhaust welded in, it always ends up leaking, or not bent quit right or not bent to take the best path.
So if your getting an exhaust system, buy a kit, then have it welded in. I personally dont think stainless steel is worth it, especially if you live in the city. I live on the farm so the underside is always dirty and by the time aluminized exhaust rusts through on the farm, i am ready to change it up anywayz.
Main point, buy a kit get it welded in and stick with aluminized.
