Magnaflow muffler to replace stock

I want to replace my stock muffler only with a magnaflow. What size of muffler should i get? What size pipe should i get? How much pipe should i get?

I plan on clamping it in there then spot welding it. I want to keep the truck stock appearing. And everyone praises the tone it makes so i think this will be a good choice. Thanks in advance

BTW i am new here

2.5" diameter or 3" for 5.4L engines
5x8 oval by 18 or 24" long should give you a nice tone. The larger the canister, the quieter.

Called the local exhaust shop this morning. For part #12246 which is a 5x8x18 aluminized muffler it will be $85 or $105 installed.

I figure i might as well have them do it so its welded and not clamped. I would also have to buy pipe and clamps so I think I might as well pay the extra $20.

So does $105 sound like a good deal to you guys? Otherwise i can ask him to bargain.

Just thought I would let you guys know, I just had this very thing done to my truck 2 hours ago. I went to Jegs to get my muffler. Its a Magnaflow 5"X8", 18" case $75 (12256). Local muffler shop installed for $20. I coudn't be happier. It has a soft, deep growl to it. Not too loud. It is too soon to really judge any performance butfrom the ride home I can tell maybe some improvment. Did I mention it sounds great!!!!! Hope this helps.

You probably won't notice any difference in sound between aluminized and stainless. One will just last longer than the other.

got it done today

I got the muffler welded in today. He put a small bend in the pipe to get it to line up with the old location. Sounds good, its not any louder, just deeper. Sounds nice though, pretty much just what i wanted

i cut out the stock muffler and had the magnaflow welded in its place. i imagine that if you buy #15609 it would be louder because of the 3 inch pipe. i am going to get a 4x18 inch tip welded on, that should make it a little louder as well.

i think my next mod will be to cut out 2 of the cats and stick pipe in there. then i want some pulleys

Where are you guys getting such great quotes for just having a muffler put on? I'm being told $110.00 to have it done to mine. I did find the Magnaflow 12456 at Jegs.....now just have to get someone to put it in for $20. What if I were to go with the 12198 which is si/do? Better performance, more sound?

Thanks,
TJ
