I own a 1998 F-250 5.4 2 wheel Drive and I took a saws all and cut off the stock system then welded a 2 1/2" si/so flowmaster 40 and had the shop bend a pipe for me and purchased a tip. It took me 15 min. to weld it in place. the tip exits before the passenger tire. I just purchased a camera and when I figure how to put it on this forum it will be easy to see!
My truck has a fuel tank on the drivers side you can not run a exhaust out that side and why run a pipe all around a spare tire what do you gain? Keep it simple and neat! you do not need a muffler shop to tell you how to do it this forum is full of information about exhaust and tires.By the way I think that a chip will give you more results than playing with a tail pipe. I hope that I did not upset some peopleI'am just a guy who likes FORD trucks.

I own a 1998 F-250 5.4 auto 2 wheel drive and last year I installed a side exit ehaust it is in front of the passenger tire. I cut off the stock pipe 17'' from the crossover and installed a Flowmaster 40 SI/SO then I had a shop bend a pipe for me it was 40'' long after that I welded a tip on. The next time I will install a SI/DO muffler and two tips. Why run pipes all over and out the back. I got tired of rear exhaust about six years ago. Why people want there truck breathe better and then they install a system that runs all over and adds to back pressure????? The chip made the most improvement of all or maybe it made the K&N and the exhaust work better. I did not ask a shop what to do I read the forms and took if from there. The best thing is to do the mobs.yourself and you will feel the improvements. Oh by the way I 'am just a person that after work likes to work on his truck, I did not mean to up set anybody!

Thumbs up

Errrrrrrr, okay? I ran mine out the back because it just plain looks better to me, and the aforementioned reason. One of the reasons was to not hear the mufflers the whole time I'm driving. I spend ALOT of time on the interstate, and mufflers under the cab is the surest way to drive yourself nuts. How much backpressure can four extra feet of unrestricted pipe add? Not much I'd imagine? My mufflers are as far back as they can go in front of the rear axle, and I still hear them under the cab.,,,,98

Out the side is simpler and ceaper though, I can admit that. And it can be done at home

my 98 has a 40 started with a single 3" out the back. that was to loud, so i had the shop tye in a 2 1/2" around the spare and out the drivers side with a 3" tip. it's quite at hwy speeds until i put some peddle to it. then you know i'm comming. and i rumble around town turning heads. it's still kinda loud at 5 am when i wake up the neighbors.

I ware two hearing aids and when it is early I turn them down, then my truck makes very little noise.

Make sure what you want by doing research and now that I see the photo of other systems I wish that I did twin tips. F150 online has been a big help! Good Luck

As in my post earlier... I stated that the muffler shop said that I would either have to remove the 17" spare OR run the pipe under the spare. I looked at it and agreed. I did not want the pipe hanging down under my spare, I don't like that look. They didn't lie to me. Anyway, I love it the way that it is now and we all like trucks. It wold suck if they all looked the same. Good Luck!

Is it a 4x4 17" spare? That I might understand. But, I have still seen 4x4 Fords with duals out the back on either side. So, unless you wanted to use 3 or 4 inch pipe, and a 17" 4x4 big tire spare, then yes, they did. It "can" be done, without either requirement they told you about.
It's routed that way on mine, and is not under the spare, and didn't require removing the spare. I agree, I like the out the side, and the out the back style equally. Have fun with the truck, that's the whole point,,,,98

Thumbs up Exhaust Setup

SLMARTIN, Is that a cat back setup or did you just buy the muffler and take it to a shop? Also is that a SIDO muffler? I am looking to add a little rumble to the silverbullet, but I dont want to lose ant low end, how did that setup work out for you and how much did it cost. Thanks in advance.

It is a 50 series Delta Flow SI/DO. I got it done at a local muffler shop. It cost me $290, but $50 of it was the tips. I could have gotten it cheaper somewhere else but I would have had to wait. I was only there for an hour and it was done.
