Angry mysterious Y pipe troubles

Hi,

I have an '84 F-150 302 4WD. I need to change the exhaust and am having trouble finding the right Y pipe. There is no cat on the truck. State inspection is OK with that - they check some decal on the door jamb and acknowledge that it was built that way from the factory and is legit. It was built in Canada.

The parts stores only show exhaust systems with catalytic converters and like all the muffler shops doubt what I'm saying. I tried the Y pipe from an '82 or '83 (?) from one store because it was the last they showed without a cat, but it's not right. Does anyone know anything about this? Know where to get a Y pipe or how to look one up?

Thanks!

I thought that anything made after 1976 (not 100% sure it `76) had to have cats on it, even if it was built in another country? I didn't think it was DOT approved without them. Someone correct me if I am wrong?
