muffler swap

Eventually i plan on getting a full custom exhaust sytem for my 5.4. But for now what muffler could i directly replace of the stock one and get the best sound? I am just sick of the stock quiet exhaust. You cant even hear my truck coming, its pretty sad for a v8. My parents have a 5.9 durango and it sounds 3 times as loud just stock.

Most of the decent sounding mufflers will be shorter. You will need a bit of pipe added. You can get nice sound and a good HP bump with a straight-through design muffler. Many here like the Magnaflow. I had a similar muffler on my 2000 5.4. It was a Dynomax Ultra-flow. I got positive comments the entire time I had the truck.

I dont care about getting hp gains. I just want to retain my low-end torque and get a little better sound out of the truck. this is just a temp. fix.

Magnaflow makes a muffler that is the same length as ours. It comes in a 6-inch or 7-inch round body 33-inches long w/ 27-inch body, 2.5-inch inlet and outlet offset. You probably would want the 6-inch for more sound. I have the 7-inch on my truck now and sorry but I do not remember the part number, do a Magnaflow internet search and I am sure you could find it. These are not very loud mufflers. Ok I found part no. for muffler, the one I have is a 13746, the 6-inch one will be a 13646. Performance Peddler has them. Hope that helps you, Glenn Taylor.

The Dynomax Ultra-flow SS that I recommended will change the sound dramatically. It's extremely throaty and provides low/medium torque. It's good to care if you get additional HP IMO. Why would anyone want to replace a quiet garbage can with another one?

i dont know what i am gonna get. I probably should just wait and do the whole new setup. My local preformance muff shop quoted me $265 for a cat-back SI/DO setup. I think I'll just save my pennies adn get that. Thanks for the help.

Hope noone misunderstood me about the Magnaflow muffler. It is louder than stock but most noticeable if someone is driving away from you in the truck, not loud at all inside. I did the muffler and a S&B drop in filter at the same time 2 1/2 years ago and did seem to pick up some performance benefits. Most noticable was the truck would pull overdrive up a hill that it would kick down to third before. I think you would be better off w/ the catback myself. I would be more concerned about pulling off a S.S. exhaust to have a shop put on one that might started to rust in a couple of years. I would spring for a Magnaflow SS catback myself. This is what I intend to purchase next.

I think i will stick with my local shop. It is about half the price, warranty for as long as I have the truck, and I can have them route the pipes however I want them. I dont like the crossover look on most of the kits.
