Post Calling all Exhaust Experts

This should be a simple enough question (yet hard enough to stump me).

OK, my XLT has single in/single out factory exhaust system. Gibson has a single in/dual out exhaust called the super truck that is not made for heavy towing. Im guessing this is because of the loss of low end torque because of better flow. Now, if I were to put a dual in/dual out exhaust (still exiting out the side like the super truck) would I lose even more low end torque or would I gain horspower and torque. I dont completely understand the dynamics I guess. You guys with duals out the back should be able to help out on this one.

I know it will sound good but am concerned on towing power. Thanks!

Question

Im not 100% sure on this but the reason Gibson advises against towing with some of their cat-backs is due to clearance issues rather than loss of torque? Anyone back me up on that or am I 100% wrong?

It is very possible to install a TRUE dual pipe system and not change the engine characteristics. The trick is to use smaller diameter pipe. Most recommend 2.25" with an absolute max of 2.5" diameter. A pressure-equalizing ("H") pipe is also recommended. I'm also considering a single muffler for the Expedition. If you get one, let me know how it works out.

Towing and exhaust clearance shouldn't be related. I'm pretty sure Triton46 is correct in that the Gibson ST is not recommended because of it's high-flow affect on torque. They make a single-pipe system for towing.
