A Flowmaster 40 with 3 inch cat back is not to loud but sounds nice with out any poping during idle or downshift.

try the ravin system available at midas-- no popping or obnoxious sounds. make sure it is the Z-55, the Z-33 is quite a bit louder. I noticed an immediate increase in mileage and performance, and it sounds great!

Cool

I like loud and throaty; if you do, take a look at the Dynomax Ultra-flows. I've got many compliments. Good luck !

Just got a Ravin Z-55 put on today, I was really impressed with the quality of the sound, a nice deep tone. No pops or inconsistent sounds. Even though I went with the z-55 instead of the louder z-33, I still am very impressed. Considering I have the V-6, Your truck having a 5.4L V8 should sound even better, producing a nice deep tone. The guys at Midas do warn you if you go with the Z33 that it's real loud. After researching all the available options, I am very pleased with the system I decided on. I'd recommend you taking a look at their system before going with the flowmaster.

What kind of prices are you looking at for the Midas system?

The price on the Ravin Z55, single in - single out installed was just around $160 including tax. My setup also included a 3" diameter chrome tip, 11" long exiting in stock location. I was quoted a price for install for a single in - dual out for around $250 installed including tax, The ravin tips for that install are up to 24" long, depending on your personal preference. The biggest plus about this system is the sound is deep and consistent, no unwanted pops or burbling. I have to admit I was a little nervous about going to midas to get a performance muffler installed. But I can honestly say it's the best choice I could of made for my needs. You won't be dissapointed if you go with a Ravin exhaust system.

heres what i went with--delta flow 40 series, single in, dual out. 2 1/4" aluminized pipe out the back. exit is even with ends of tailgate.(not right next to trailer hitch) sounds great to me ..no popping..real smooooth..maybe a little loud for some...it has a slight hum at 62-65 mph(i guess it doesnt know the words) i couldnt be more pleased with the set up. and to all you ravin dudes midas on long island(NY)doesnt have the parts in yet because its the end of the season. what season? thanks to all my fellow ford freaks for the info

deezer,

Where are the hangers located for your tips?
I've seen a lot of dual tips out the back
with the hangers welded to the hitch.
I'm ready to get duals, but I want my tips
further outboard of the hitch like yours.

i had the tips welded right to the pipe and that was hung from the frame, right above the spare tire...a muffler shop did all the installation work. if the tips get crappy over time they get cut off and replaced. i really liked the look with the tips spread out as i have a flareside and it makes the truck appear a little wider---------------------------------------------------------------2001 xlt s/c flareside 5.4 3.55L/S, sport, silver, classIII hitch, auto.

Check out your local Meinecke dealer, they have a set of factory bent duals available for the F-150, but cheaper than Flowmasters. But, I do recommend the Delta flow 40 series muffler for this setup. It is a 2 chamber sytem that has a good deep throaty sound to it. If you want one a little quieter, try their 3 chamber muffler.
