Question Replace stock "Y" or go dual for more sound?

Will either of these help out with sound? Performance?

Hi Jackal

About a two months ago i replaced my stock
muffler with a 40 series flow master.
I noticed a little loss in bottom end so
about a month later i replaced the factory Y
pipe. It was amazing, the power i gained after the new Y pipe was installed and my
gas mileage went up also. Im geting 18 miles
per gallon, and i drive it like i stole it.
And buy the way it it SOUNDS GOOD.
Hope this helps.

Larry.

Hey man...so you instaled a FM 40, then had the factory "Y" replaced with a "custom" one? Was the "Y" pipe pre-fab aftermarket, or was it custom made my the shop? DId you notice a difference in sound? Thanks man!!!

Hey Jackal

I got it from jegs, it`s called a Y collector
part #389-Y250300A it cost 37.99.
Summit also has them for about the same price. After the Y pipe was installed i had
them install 3inch pipe back to the muffler
and it sounds good when you get on it.

Hope this helps.

there is a thread here, i think titled
'nice little exhaust mod' with pictures showing the y replacement.

i had mine made by a shop in pennsylvania (stainless). it cost double over what you can buy stock (aluminumized steel).

i still cant believe how much better my truck runs with this installed, overall nicer
sound as well. i took a gamble and replaced this due to what i read on this site and it was well worth it.

Why not go true duals with like 2.25" pipes from cat to muffler. Seems like our trucks are just begging for true duals with the dual cats on them already.

Hi las52

This mod ( Y collector ) will work for either
engine. (4.6/5.4 ) they both use the same size exhaust pipe.
How do you like the 3.73 gears in your truck?. Im finding with all the mods i have done that the 3.55 that i have are not enough
gear. If you need more info let me know.

Interesting thread! I am curently mulling the same choices. I have already replaced the stock muff with a Flowmaster 50. Now I must decide whats next.

1. Replace the stock Y and upgrade the muff piping from the Y to the tip from 2.5" to 3".
or
2. trash the Y completely and upgrade to 2.5" dual outlets.

My main concern is torque/performance because I tow a 6000 lb tailer. Sound is secondary.

Give me some feedback!!

If I were in your shoes, I'd stay single in just to be safe, but I'd difinately go with a custom "Y". I read here that in 2001, Ford switched to a 2 3/4" better designed "Y pipe, but I don't know how to tell without measuring. Looks like the same old junker to me.

Jackal,
I am curious about how your truck performed after cranking the torsion bars.

I also forgot to add the details of my truck!

a couple questions;
-What are the original sizes of the exhaust pipes? I think mine is 2 1/4 at the tip. Is it this size all the way to the muffler and from the muffler to the Y pipe?
-What size is the Y pipe?
-What size is the pipe from the Y to the cats?

What sizes have y'all upgraded to for the Y, connector pipes, etc...?

Do I understand this correctly, you got Flowmasters, and lost a lttle low end. Then added the larger Y, and got the low end back?

LOVE IT!!! Front end WILL NOT DIP at all under heavy braking, only the rear sways into heavy turns, and the ride is a LOT firmer...like, IMO, a truck should be. Go for it man. I did 3 1/2 cranks on the driver's side, and about 1 crank on the passanger side to even it out, and the driver's side is still about a 1/8" low, I think, from side to side. She still sags a bit in the front comapired to the rear by maybe an inch or more, but the handling is GREAT!!! Just get it aligned for free at your dealer if you have less than 12,000 miles.
