Tips make a difference in sound???

I must confess, I don't know the answer to this one:

Is there a tip available that you can add to make your exhaust louder? I mean the tip only, not tail pipe, not muffler, the tip only. If there is such a product, any recommendations?

Someone mentioned this in a different post, but I never thought the tip alone could make a large difference.

Thanks in advance...

Yes it can make a difference. Think about it, if you sat there and talked out loud, it wouldn't be that loud. But if you got a big tube and talked, itd be louder and more projected.

For example, one of my friends got a 40 series FM like I have but he didn't get tips. He just has it dumped out the sides behind the tires. His is not nearly as loud or agressive or deep sounding as mine and we have the same engine. Hope this helps some...

That seems to make sense to me. The local Advanced Auto sells all kinds of tips for $9. Maybe I'll experiment some?

I just had my Magnaflow's installed and I was wondering the same thing. The intermediate pipes come into the tips by about 5 inches. IF they were cut down or the tips moved back, would this produce a louder sound, or have little to now effect?

For length, I think that the longer it is, the more time it has to echo maybe. I could be way off. Mine are 18" x 3" diameter. Sound pretty good.

R1Jester, I think if you moved the tips back so that the intermediate pips come into the tips farther, the tips would end up just for show. I'd leave it as short as you could. Mine come in about 2 inches.

That's what I was getting at, basically minimizing the amount of int. pipe that enters in to the tips. I'll get them short enough then weld them on. Makes sense to me....

I think some of you are looking at this wrong. Dumping your exhaust actually makes your truck louder from my experience. Maybe I am wrong, but my friend's truck would set off car alarms quite frequently while mine was more mellw. We both had Flowmaster 40 series but his was dumped and mine had a tip.

Just switched from a 3.5" x 12" tip to a 4" x 18" today. It isn't any louder but it definitely sounds better and looks better. The 4" is deep and mellow where as the 3.5 is sharper and crisper.

Performance Peddler. I got a Magnaflow tip (funny isn't it? A Magnaflow tip on a Gibson exhaust). $42 & free shipping. I had the welding guy cut the end off so it would fit on a 3" tail pipe.

Pics in my gallery.

Also dont forget about coned tips. They make a totaly difference in tone and amplitude. Think of it like a trumpet horn......it has an effect on how loud and far it goes.
