Advice for true dual system for 1999 F-150 4x4

My stock exhaust has rotted out and I'm thinking of a true dual system fabricated by a local muffler shop. It will involve removing the cats and using glass packs. The system will go from the manifolds to exit under rear bumper. What diameter tubing is best? Glass packs? What about the O2 sensors?

Hey,

I just did a cat back true dual custom system by a local muffler shop. They cut off the y pipe and put in 12" glasspacks and turned it out behind each tire, 2 1/2" pipe. I was told not to take off the main cats, but u could take off the pre-cats. If u take off the mains, u can run into major 02 sensor problems cause they will be getting too much fuel on them and will try and lean out your motor too much. They need to see a difference after the cats or else theres problems. Anyway u can read my recent post called "to pipe or not to pipe", there should be some good info in there

put a H or X pipe in there.. it connects the 2 sides... in the shape of the letter.. i have an H... it balances the exhaust flow and will help reduce the loss of low end power which u lose when converting to true dual

my setup

i'm getting mine done soon-i'm getting 2.25" magnaflow x pipeput as close to original y as possible [for better scavenging] and 2-2.25 4x9 x14 magnaflow ss mufflers as close as possible to rear axle to keep sound from up front-all tubing is ss as well [keeps heat in for better scavenging]-i'm going 2.25" instead of 2.5" as i baby the throttle and use all the part throttle torque improvements my tuner provides- that and my van is nearly 8k lbs-i'll post results-phil

If you have emissions testing in your area, you're headed for trouble. If not, then you'll be ok. However, I'd say just get a nice set of high flow cats on there for "legality" reasons. The tree huggers are cuasing the auto performance area issues in those areas.

The X pipe is like the new (not really new) hotness for exhausts. I have always use the H pipe, but on my current 5.4 it is unequalized due to space constraints. (I have true dual 3 inch pipes) You can get a pair of 02 sensor emulators online for cheap, like $35 and they simulate the signal of the rear sensors. You have to have thefront sensors, they tell the computer what kind of mixutre to run. Straight back with no cats and glasspacks is going to be hollerin from hell loud. May as well take the radio out for wieght savings at that point Or invest in a real good one and some good speakers!

If you want to see some pictures of how I did mine, just email me and I'll send them to you.

Hey,

Mine was $380 Canadian with the taxes. Aluminized pipes, and 12" glasspacks. I know its not the best system, but it sounds good and I don't plan on having the truck long.

I have true dual exhaust, with 2 1/2 inch tubing and 18" glasspacks and it sounds sweet. There is no popping sound or anything like that. It sounds like a truck with flowmasters without the costs. I didnt take the cats off, so I don't know what kind of problems you will run into like that. So good luck with what ever you decide with.
