turn downs the wrong way to go?

I have a friend that cut off his exaust and put turn downs on and he took them off cause he hear that you can bend your valves is this true? It sounds like a good exaust is this true.

lol thats about the funniest thing ive ever heard! The only way you are going to chance bending the valves is running shortie headers open. how far back are these turn downs located? I have turndowns, have had for 40k

Basically some people are afraid to run open headers or even exhaust dumped at the axle because they will crack a valve with that. What happens is the exhaust can get hot (we're talking about thousands of little explosions happening in your engine and a lot of that heat is leaving through the exhaust port into your headers) and the air outside can be cold and when you get a very hot metal and get it against something very cold (in this case the air outside) it can crack (I broke a glass fresh out of the dishwasher like that). But that is only with no headers or shorty headers. Go to a dragstrip and you will see a lot of cars running only long tube headers and those top fuelers run a short length of pipe and they are fine because the length of tubing heats up and keeps the air right next to the engine hot and gradually cools down.

In short, like built54 said, you are fine. I am running a turndown with a 40 flow and ran that on my old ranchero (along with pretty much everyone I knew) with no problems.

Turn downs will only damage a valve when and if you forget to lube the exhaust bearings.....

I dont think i've ever owned a truck with an exhaust system that went much past the cab, that includes one truck with long tube headers and straight pipes dumped before the axle, never had any problems.

Well you can get the pipe from a muffler shop or autozone, depends on how much you need. I dumped mine right before the back axle.

Yeah you should be safe, i've never heard of any problems with a turn down tip. I plain to just clamp one in once I get my Super 40, if it takes awhile for the Super 40 my buddy promissed me then i'll clamp one onto my stock muffler for kicks.
