Anyone replace just the muffler?

I'm thinking of just changing out my stock muffler for a Magnaflow. I tow some, and would like the mileage/power benefit of a freer-flowing exhaust (and wouldn't mind the better sound) but don't want to spend the big dollars for a cat-back (and don't care about a big, shiny tip). Is there not a big enough difference without switching to the new tubing to make it worthwhile, though?

If changing out just the muffler, can someone recommend the proper unit?

TIA.

Andy

I did the muffler only route a couple of weeks ago and am very pleased with the result. I wanted a flow through muffler that gave me a nice sound but not too loud. I went with the Magnaflow # 11266, which is a 5X9X18 unit. I bought it off of Ebay from Perfomance peddler. I cost me $65.00 shipped to my door. I just cut out the old muffler and installed this one. I did have to buy an 18" piece of tail pipe and used about 12" of it to make up the difference in lenght between the old muffler and the new Magnaflow. I have noticed an increase in power as well as maybe a mile per gallon better fuel usage. Hope this helps with your choice.

go ahead with a magnaflow, which one I am unsure of i'm a Flowmaster guy

Should be a good install with all the right hardware

You may want Dynomax band clamps, 1 universal hanger, & possoble some nuts bolts & washers. I have all this stuff together waiting to but in my Flowmaster

Yes, just had a Magnaflow 12256 installed today with no extra pipes except what was needed to make up the difference in going with a shorter muffler. Very pleased with the result. See my thread for description. Good luck.

Lightbulb

FYI: The kit for your truck 15609 should use this muffler 14251.

I just put the full cat-back on my truck and wouldn't want it any louder (24" muffler). Just keep in mind shorter = louder.

BTW: greetings from Canton, neighbor!!

I just did a muffler and tip change a couple of days ago .
I used a stainless magnaflow 6" round by 18" body lengh muffler and 18" tip , purchased from performance peddler ( discount code scionlife ) .
I think the round ones look cool on a truck , there's plenty of room for them and Magnaflow states that the shape of the muffler is only for clearance issues .
$62.00 for muffler and $ 29.00 for the tip .
I had a custom installer weld it up for $63.00 .
I was quoted $450.00 for a custom fabbed Y pipe on back ( muffler & tip) with 3" pipe but thats alot of money and I got a two wheeler for my hotrodding .

Same reasons as you OHio , a little sound and more towing power .
The 18" is just noticable and not loud by any means , the 4 cats really cut the sound down . Looking back I maybe should have went with a 14" size ( shorter = louder ) .
The truck feels a little freer reving .

I rarely rev past 2800 rpm towing or otherwise so I don't really see a benefit to the 3" pipe .
I would think that the higher exhaust velocity of the stock 2.5" would help cylinder fill up to a medium rpm range especially with a free flowing muffler .

Which muffler

I was wanting to do the same thing with my 2002 4.6L. Im just not sure which magnaflow to go with? I really want something that will wake my neighbors up because they really cant hate me anymore. (my 87 150 with no exhaust at all) Just something that will go in the stock location and just have to add pipe to make it fit.

I have a magnaflow 14X9 muffler welded in place of the stock pig muffler. Still get the full benefits of the magnaflow sound.

Lots of good info, guys. If anyone has before/after sound clips, post 'em up!

(BTW, Hi, JimIII. Don't let my wife see your truck. She really like the burgundy ones!)

I have an 05 supercrew and I just had the stock muffler replaced last Tuesday with a Magnaflow 5"x11"x22" oval (part number 12577). I kept all the stock piping and they only had to add about 6" of new pipe to fill the gap and I had them add a chrome 2.5" pencil tip to make it look nice. The sound is just what I wanted. I drive about 45K miles a year so I spend a lot of time in the truck and did not want any interior resonance or drone. I debated between the 18" and the 22" and I'm glad I went with the 22". If you are looking for something to really bark at you when you hit the throttle, maybe you should consider the 14" or 18" or a Flowmaster. With the 22", you can definitely hear it when you crank the truck up and you can hear it when you accelerate on a freeway entrance ramp. I like it because I can still talk on the phone or drive for 3 or 4 hours without getting a headache. It now sounds like a V8 and maybe once the newness wears off I will see a slight increase in mileage. I have been hammering it a little more than usual since I got it just to play around some. Good luck with whatever you decide to put on.
