Do-it-yourself Vs muffler shop

Have a 2005 XLT screw 4x4 and looking at upgrades (wheels, tires, intake, performance chips, exhaust systems). I have been reviewing several systems on the net, espcially on the F150 sites. It seems that the exhaust systems on the net range in price from 350-550, or up. I called a couple of the local muffler shops and the prices including labor is from 250-550. Are these kits on the net (Banks, magnaflo, etc) higher quality. Why would I install myself if I can pay the muffler guys to do it for same price?

Are you referring to a custom built exhaust system? This is very popular in my area. However, none of my local shops have mandral bending equipment. THey all make compression bends which restrict exhaust flow. Most people modify exhaust in the search of increased flow (more power and better mpg) or a louder sound. It's funny to me because they would be better off and spend less money by just replacing their OEM muffler with a high flow muffler or remove it all together. If a shop is making compression bends, you will be much better off with an aftermarket exhaust that has smooth mandral bends.

The Magnaflow kits have proven dyno numbers, and are all Stainless Steel. Is that what your local shop is offering??

I bought a kit for $340, and pd a shop to install it (welded) for $60.
