I got drone

I had a new 5X8X14 Magnaflow welded in, in place of my stock exhaust can, on my '06 4.6L S/Crew - 6.5' bed. Man, from about 1500-1600 RPMs up thru maybe 2300-2400, it drones like a big dawg. I mean it's loud, ear-splitting, and the tone in the cab is such that normal conversation or radio volume is not an option.

Now, ironically, while stopped and idling, or coasting (no throttle) while rolling, it's silent. But put your foot into it, and it's a different story. So stoplights are no problem until you drive away. There's no mid-60s musclecar rumble or anything while it's parked. But the drone/tone as you pull away is bad. I haven't yet tried it on the interstate, but I'm worried.

Questions: will this calm down after I 'burn in' the exhaust for a few hundred miles? The dealer mentioned a "resonator" to quiet the tone down. What's that, and would it help me?

Is it a SIDO or a SISO and do you have pipe or pipes out the rear or dumped? The tip can make a difference as well. It will only get louder as it breaks in.

SISO, stock location, stock pipes before and after the can, no tip, and oh crap I hope not. The drive home confirmed it, the rpm range where I drive the most has a deafening roar. It's funny how although the pitch of the sound is real low, it's still shrill enough to split my ear drums.

Great. I'm wondering if I should take it back on Monday and have them put an 18" in. I know I shouldn't have let the guy sell me on the 14. Dammit.

Had the same problem with a Flowmaster 40. Went to a Flowmaster 50 with SI/DO and solved the problem.

This is the first complaint I have heard about the drone with a Magnaflow. Maybe if you have the installer change the angle of your exhaust and install another tip of a different size.

I have the 5x8x18 with 3" from the Y-back. I went this way because it is functionally the same as Magnaflows Cat-back kits and many on this site claim that is the perfect sound and no drone.

Anyway after running it for two weeks I just ordered the 24" version of the same muffler. I like the sound and all but mine is a work truck and it is just a little loud for me. Many others on here have wrote about how they did exactly opposite of me and started with the 24 and wanted more so in with the 18.

I'll have the 24 tomorrow and installed on Sunday. Will update

Performancepeddler.com. I got the 18" muffler for $64 and the 24"er for $71 after using the wholesale login "vwvortex4u". Not to say that still works, they've changed it a few times over the last couple months.

I never had drone with either of my 18" magnaflow set ups run since Aug. 2005. I have been debating on going to the 24" so the volume will be lower at higher rpms and my speeding will not be as noticable by the many local law enforcement agencies whos areas I cross daily

I have the 15609 Magnaflow kit on my truck. The canister is 24" long. I would NOT want any shorter (louder). I'm not the type who wants to hear their exhaust all day long!!

That's some productive commentary, Dan. I have never had drone with my magnaflow muffler. 3" straight through 18" muffler welded inplace of the stock muffler. I bet the 16616 sounds even better.

I had the same exact Magnaflow using the stock piping.. I have absolutly no drone in my 05 5.4L. I actually wished it was louder.
I am also running the same muffler in my 94 Bronco 5.0L. That drones like crazy.

Where did you have them mount it? I had the shop weld mine in as far back as possible as shown in the picture on the F150. That way the muffler is actually sitting below the box, not the cab. When my KR gets delivered I think I'm going to do the same thing again.
