To X pipe or not to X pipe?

Well, I am going to be sending my Truck - 02 F150, 4.6, supercab, short bed, 5spd - to have any exhaust made for it. We are going to be putting true duals on it. I have been doing a lot of reading on here about exhaust and have not really found a clear answer to my question. Is there any advantage or good reason to do an X pipe? Is there a negative side to the X pipe? Another thing I wondered about is the cats. Is there any negative side to emptying out the two of the four cats?

The X-pipe will help regulate back pressure. Meaning even flow from both pipes. No negative to doing an X-pipe to my knowledge. Emptying 2 of your 4 cats will give you more power. You may lose some low end "torque" but make up for it in the high end "horsepower". You will also get more sound out of it if you gut the cats.

The explaination by Natty was Good but beware that X-pipes work better with straight thru type mufflers such as Dyno Max/Magna Flow ect. Where an H-pipe works equally well with Both Chambered(Flow master 40) or the above straight thru type. With an X-pipe and Chambered mufflers(Flows) you may get an Exhaust Note that is more like a raspy Formula 1 car than the Deep Muscle car sound most people like.. Gutting the Cats will lead to more sound than actual HP gain....And really **** Al Gore off.........Good Luck

I was running true duals, then installed an x pipe, i could tell a huge off the line increase.

Well, I am doing "blanks" for mufflers. They are more or less a really short glasspack, straight thru style. So I guess there will be an X pipe under the truck.
