Just Replacing the Muffler

hey guys, i have pretty much abandoned the full catback for my truck for a while, but i still want something better than the stock whisper muffler. so if i just replaced the stock muffler with some pipe and an 18" maggie, and put a tip on the end of the stock exhaust, should that give me a nice sound, and not lose any power/mpg, or maybe gain a little(doesnt matter, as long as i dont lose any)? and im thinking 18" muffler now, dont wanna know its there till i punch it.

thanks
Adam M

Why not get a full exhaust? Price?

You can get a shop to do in-house piping with a Magnaflow muffler and tip for under $300 EASILY if you shop around.

don't EXPECT noticeable gains either way...you may have some, but few do.

I did a mini-review on the 24" here. I never added a tip....couldn't find one I like yet.

sounds like it will be a good exhaust. For a few more bucks you could get a dual exit setup maybe

My setup was very inexpensive. Dynomax Bullet 12" for around $35, welded on for around $20 with a turn down. Sounds great.

I bought an 18" x 6" round maggie, and an 18" x 3.5" 45 slash cut for 85$ shipped from performance peddler. Got local muffler shop remove old system, weld on new muffler, fabbed up 3" tailpipe. Then welded on the tip to come out in front of rear tire. Rotated it 90 degrees and installed at a 45 degree angle with inside painted black. Charged me 50 bucks. Looks pretty good. Sounds louder then i expected. Quiet at idle. Loud at WOT, and when it echoes off buildings or cars. Seems to have a little more power. Gas increased some, but barely noticeable because i'm always stomping on the gas pedal. Tip yellowed after only a few days. Overall satisfied with the system, for the price i have invested in it.

I did a similar thing but with an 18" oval. It's really not much louder than stock. Put it this way, my wife never noticed I changed anything. I'd like to try the round version. Some more sound would be great.

I was having a hard time deciding between the 14" and the 18". Scared the 14 would be too loud, and the 18 not loud enough. So i went with the smallest 18", the 6" round. Having a shorter tailpipe exiting in front of the tire, and the 18 x 3.5 tip helps to make it louder. My wife definately noticed the change. It's louder then stock on start up, quiet on idle, then the more you stomp the louder it gets. I think just an 18" with stock tailpipe would of been way too quiet. Next mod i think will be the Airaid Jr.

i would like a dual setup, but i dont wanna be like everyone around my area. so im really just thinking single with a 14" now with the too quiet reviews on the 18".(but i still dont wanna be too loud at the boat ramp at 3 am or coming home from work at 2 am, but i wanna know its there when i stomp on it) and a 3.5" slash cut tip on it. and if i got a 14" first, and it was too loud for me, i could just chop it off and weld in a 18" myself....the muffler shop said theyd pull the stock stuff and replace it with the maggie and tip for $40 bucks, which sounds damn good to me! that includes the extra little hunk of pipe to make up the difference. and the gains isnt a big deal, wasnt really looking for any other than sound, and as long as i dont lose anything im fine with it!

what yall still think on this? anyone got soundfiles of a 97-03 f150 with the 5.4 and some exhaust?

thanks

I think that would sound good and not be to loud being single exhaust.
Thats the 14in x 4in round muffler right?
I think you will be happy with that

i was thinking more of the maggie 12226, 5x8 oval body 14" long. or a 4x9 14" muffler. and which one is louder the 5X8 or 4X9? and have any of you put an 18" tip on your stock exhaust, cuz with my measurements it owuld be sticking out about 6 inches more then the stock exhaust if i welded it right before the bend..... and tht makes it like 4 or 5 inches out from my mud flap...

nobody knows? i think im goin with the 14" 4x9 SI/SO offset in, offset out, and what do you guys think of silverline tips, i found a nice one that would work great, polished stainless, 12" long, 3.5 od out, 2.5" in, 30 degree slash rolled edge. its the Silverline TK3512SR25, just cant find anywhere on the net that sells it!

hey guys, i got her done, and man she sounds sweet! i got the tank of gas with my heavy foot outta the way, and just filled up on my 2nd (where i drove normal) tank and i got about 1.3 MPG better than stock...is it a fluke or is haveing a non super huge muffler helping my mileage out? and oh ya, with muffler, tip, 18" of 2.5 pipe, and me doing my own welding up of it, it cost me a whole $75...not bad if you ask me!

Being able to hear what your foot is doing can make your driving more conservative too.
