I have a 07 with the factory 20" wheels and I'm looking to get the Magnaflow 16612. Is this something that I should be worried about. Im only going to install the exhaust. I dont want anything else.

If you seach this site, or any of the others, you won't find this as a pandemic by any means. And Magnaflow has sold a lot of these; more than a few owned by folks here.

As long as there is clearance ( no contact) there are no issues. Except for extenuating factors, as noted here ....

Wild story, J. Crazy, in fact. That trailer is pretty dang big for that truck... are you really stressing the drivetrain out to the max? Not sure... just thinking out loud. It seems like a sensor somewhere in the line would toss a code because of the EGT?

No, RP.

There is no direct measurement of this parameter in these trucks. You'd need to add a pyro to do this. At it's extreme, the catalysts and the O2's may become compromised, and codes thrown at that point after the fact, over time.

It's worth noting that when custom tunes are R&D'd by you-know-who, this is exactly what he does as part of that process; both for perf and tow-specific tunes.

A few-plus Lightning and diesel owners pushing the envelope also mount EGT gauges for safety reasons - not for melting spares, but to ensure they are running within a margin of safety - since no other means of determining this condition exists while underway.

It's usually caused by tending lean at high loads. EGT's are yet another 'window' into how well/safely a vehicle is performing.

Note that I am NOT saying that this is the definitive reason here, only that, since it can be easily verified or dispelled as a possible cause, it should be investigated.

MGD, I know who and I don't even need a egt gauge to tell me that. Thinking back to when mine burned and learning some things, I agree with you and do believe a lean or slightly lean condition led to higher than normal temps in both these circumstances. At the time I ran a very questionable intake and won't even mention the tunes here (no one would know them anyway) but let's just say they should stick to 'stangs. However, the piping was pretty close to the spare. It's sort of embarrasingly stupid but I noticed mine being within about 1/2-inch of the spare when installed and I was unable to get it shifted much even after re-doing it back there. When bolted back up the piping just wanted to go back where it was which was very close. My spare did not shift. On some applications this just may be worth noting and is easily taken care of with a little pipe work. Maybe it also took a lean condition and obviously towing heavy.

Dang it! You must have some bad juju or something going on. I have towed our travel trailer to Holiday World and other destinations with my Edge on level 2 and my 16612 hasn't set anything on fire. Yet. Definitely need to measure the exhaust temps stock and on level 2 to see if there is a big difference. That may point you in the right direction to get to the bottom of this.

Yup/ You'll be fine. The other item is aftermarket custom tuning. Check out the Chip forum for info on this stuff.

Man this is crazy stuff. I've had my Magnaflow SI/DO system on for a year and 10k miles now. My driver's side tailpipe clears the spare by at least 2 inches and I've had no problems at all. I've towed a 25 ft travel trailer 500 miles with it twice this year also. I am on the stock tune though but I do think you should get a temp gun and check pipe temps.

We shall see this weekend I am going camping again, about 3 hours away and I will be towing with NO EDGE this time.
