homemade intake, serious issues

so today i found a peice of intake tubing in my buddys garage and made an intake that looks just like the k&n intake for my truck, (01 5.4), all my sensors are in rite and i have a clean filter, but since i installed it i lost all my power below 3500 rpms and it idles around 1000-1100 rpms, and it even shut off once, i scaned it and i have no codes. i kno i should just put my stock one on and wait till i can afford a k&n or somthing like that, but i would like to try to get mine working

did you disconnect the battery for 30 minutes or so? If not id try that. If not the pipe might just be too big and need a custom tune.

Not sure if the 01's are similar in this respect to the NBS but are you sure the MAF sensor is facing the right direction? Is it broke maybe?

i think the 01's are the old 2v with the old maf. not sure why its messing up. i assume u hooked up the temp sensor and the two hoses near the throttle body. if you have the old style maf, then you should be ok running any intake. good luck to you.

Here's the intake I just installed last week:

Oddly enough, after putting it in, I had hellish problems keeping the truck running. It's turn over perfectly fine, but wouldn't run without giving it gas.

Turns out I had to 'relearn' idle. Basically, I held the throttle open a tiny bit a few minutes so that the truck idled in the proper range, and then took the place holder (a screw driver) out and let the truck idle for a while.

Give it a shot. Can't hurt right?

clean your IAC motor, I bet that's the issue either that or there's a vacuum leak

Make sure you didn't push the intake tube too far back in where it couples with the intake. I made that bonehead mistake once. It was blocking the tube that runs to the back of the motor. Not sure what it's called.

But anyway it ran like crap till I fixed it.

Yes listen to efuerhin, I just installed my air force one intake and it had that in the directions to make sure you don't cover up the breather lines with the main intake pipe. I agree with all of the above, if you are having major issues something is not right, an air leak is somewhere, OR something is not plugged in all the way/plugged in correctly, or a sensor got damaged. I made two DIY intakes and never had a problem...they were just ugly lol. Check and recheck, the computer isn't your issue now, its a bigger one, one that is easily fixable probably. Check your mass air sensor, albeit carefully, make sure the two tiny wires appear to be connected still....i would assume you would get a CEL though.

Sooo...

check for leaks number one inspection
clean the IAC solenoid- search for info, involves removing two bolts and then just working some seafoam deep creep or wd-40 in the guts of it to clean

check all electrical component connections to ensure they are engaged

well the more i have been driving the better it got, when i just came home tonite it felt great, normal idel, more power then before. im thinking mabe the truck just had to relearn how to run with a new intake(just a shot in the dark)
