Need advise about my Flowmasters (noise)

I had a set of true duals put on my 99 f-150 a couple years ago. My flowmasters sound great to me but recently the sound has been giving the wife a headache when she rides with me. Is there a way I can tone them down without taking them off?

Thanks Mike

Yea I still have the Cats on it. She has migraines and the noise (low rumble) seems to bring it on sometimes.

i dought you'll get flowmasters quiet enough. you'd have to switch to a quieter muffler. like magnaflow 18 inch mufflers. darrenws6 will be in here sometime. he'll tell you what you need to do.

If you are willing to buy, and dedicate time to do the work, you can gut your interior and lay out sound deadening layering. It can be costly at around $100, and alot of work to do.

I honestly would suggest swap the muffler to a non chambered muffler. The 18" Magnaflow is as quiet as it gets inside to not drone terribly. I would say the 14", but the 14" will drone inside a little also, but not as much as the 11" mufflers can.

Actually, with a chambered muffler, low rpm note which is out of the throttle, is where the drone comes from. Under acceleration it sounds less deep. Check out my interior exhaust video and you will see what I mean.

Magnaflow #14568. That's your best option for cutting down on the noise.

Thanks for all the advise guys. I did some checking on the magna flow but with my job pending layoffs after the first of the year, I cant afford changing out the mufflers and I cant figure out any way of making them sound any less loud. Guess I will have to see how the new year goes and have her wear ear plugs when she has to ride with me.

Take care and have a Great christmas

Happy Holidays!

Thats the main reason i got the flowmaster 50 series delta flow, they have a nice deep sound out side not enoyiing loud, but the interior sound is mild. I can listen to my radio on like 5 or 6 on the volume and under stand and hear everything. When you put the widnow down you can hear it more. I didnt want a supper loud one anyway just a nice tone. If you look at flowmaster book the outside is almost same as 40 series but interior is way lower. Just my 2 cents.

Apply some sound deadening material to the inside of your cab. Look around in the audio forums if you need more info.

I hate to say it but I'm gonna anyway.

Buy some better mufflers and put um on before your wife finds someone that cars more about her then you do!

look and see if they make silencers for your mufflers. I know years ago when i had a import car and modified exaust on it i had a silencer stuck on the inside of the tip to make it queit so cops would leave me alone. Not sure if they make them for truck exuast though.

i hear you can put a 18" glasspack infront of the flowmasters to calm them down a little, they act as resonators

how are your tips ran you might think about running them straight out the back if they arent already

I was going to say the same if you run it all the way out the back i will lessen the sound quite a bit. I used to have the old 40 series it was way too loud down the hwy, so for the money i got hookers. they werent as loud and it improved throttle response. But if you can spend a little more you might as well get a magnaflow
