I've done the DWV intake mod with the rubber connector into the firewall, and have had no problems. I was planning to remove the "baffles", "silencers" or "resonators", or what ever the heck they"re called, but now I see that maybe they should be left on. I've got the knockout caps to plug the holes. Should I remove the "Helmholtz" resonators or let well enough alone? The truck seems to run well as is. It may look better without, but am I risking anything by removing them?

Only thing we might be giving up is a little HP and or mpg, but it would likely be VERY small.

Oh yeah, you'll get a little more intake noise when going WOT or pulling a load.

I just got around to purchasing the alternate rigid 3 inch tubing that fordmt08 used for his intake modification and it looks like it will work well installed a couple of different ways. The tubing required is made by Spectre Peformance. It is part number 8741 for the black color (8742 is Red, 8746 is Blue, 8748 is Silver) and it is called: 3" Flexible Air Duct. It is priced ~$20 and should be available at O'Reilly Auto Parts and Autozone stores. I installed it completely collapsed using one of the two connectors that come with the kit to go into the fender inlet and using the downspout connector to connect to the stock flexible section. It fits perfectly and does not require any hose clamps. I will be testing it out with my Gryphon Custom 87 performance and Custom 87 towing tunes this week. This variation completely eliminates any possibility of the downspout connector collapsing or getting sucked inside out.

Drone with CAI

JackandJanet also adapted a variation of the Gotts mod to the 04-08 F150 with the 5.4L engine. The DWV intake mod is not intended to work as good or better than an aftermarket CAI. It was intended to improve the intake air flow by removing the restriction at the end while preserving the factory noise reduction built into the stock intake. I have tried several other aftermarket CAIs and they all created horrible drone while towing our travel trailer. This mod does not create any drone whatsoever.
I use a AFE Cai and it had "drone" under load. Switched to a AFE dry Filter on the Cai and away went the drone! Still pulls much beter than stoc right off the line and at 3500 rpms pulling up a steep grade makes a nice hiss pulling hard. Love the dry filter and have used the Cai for thousnads of miles towing. NO lean Issues.

I tried 3 different intakes and all had unbearable drone towing our travel trailer. I went back to the stock intake with the DWV intake mod and an AEM DryFlow panel drop in filter.

Ok so what if you just removed the piece all together? Aside from possibly higher air temp this would essentially produce the same result right?

I just did this install last night with a K&N drop in filter, and the throttle response and pickup was a lot better. It didn't add much fuel mileage or change the normal drive conditions, but when accelerating or WOT it was a lot smoother and less hesitation. Other than my Livewire tuner this is probably the next best addition to performance yet.

And as far as preventing the rubber nosepiece from sucking into the intake, I took another worm clamp and put it around that piece to prevent just that. I was able to get it to seat all the way down before clamping, so if yours didn't seat well that may be the reason it's coming off easy. The clamp should help prevent this in either condition.

I did this to my '06 today and cut out the silencer. I must say that to the butt dyno it feels better. I was pleasantly surprised.

Just fabbed up 2 of these units tonight. Installed one on my '05 and giving the other to my cousin for his '06. I'll do the test drive on the way to the office in the morning. Get back with an opinion after. This mod just makes sense to me. Opening up that hole improves airflow rate exponentially. It's gotta help.

Thanks,

David
