Honestly i'd like to do my exhaust myself since i know i can make a bead good enough with a stick welder to not have any leaks or anything. I was a pretty decent mig welder until i stopped welding at my other job. But since i'm a kid, and in the field of welding experience means more i got booted. I could lay a better bead than 2 of the guys who welded full time in the shop. But anyway ya I'm going to price the two shops in town that do exhuast sometime soon. I had a true dual set-up on my old truck (already had it when i got it but 99% positive they were glass packs) and loved the sound. Also had a 351 windor so that helps!! ha
Ive also got an '01, and i have true duals with an H pipe, and never touched any cat. the guy that told you that is a moron dont let him touch your truck. its easy to see you dont have to cut the cats to do true duals just by lookin under the truck and seein where to dis-connect the Y pipe and run seperate pipes from there on out lol he's an idiot. you should have 4 cats being an 01. but ive heard some say that some have as many as 6 cats and this could be the problem but i doubt it...

Well see i was thinking about this. If it comes off the manifolds into a y pipe then your cats, and then into the muffler and so on. then it would be impossible to do a true dual set up without touchin the cats. I haven't had time to crawl under then today..We just built a 48 ft x 48 ft, 4 car garage, and me and dad have been working on puting insulation up in it and putting the upstairs floor in it, so we've been pretty busy lately.

And it's either let him do it, which he did a good job on my super 44 or let the other exhaust shop do it and pay about double what i'd pay with him. Idk i'm just thinking of putting a cam in it, switching to this maggie race muffler, and then saving my money for a while and possibly find a low mileage lightning motor and tranny and switch it out.

You want loud and obnoxious? Look into SLP exhaust. Wanna sell your FM setup or just the muffler. Mines to darn quiet stock.

No. Loud and obnoxious = sounds like straight up ****. I just want a little louder than what it is now. And its not really that loud. My tires are louder than the exhaust sometimes...Doesn't help they are 35x12.5 BF Goodrich Mud Terrains.

it comes off the manifold with your 2 cats on each separate bank,(totalling 4 cats) then the Y pipe after the cats. so your cats are already on separate pipes. so all that is needed to do is cut the Y pipe before it joins together and run separate pipes lol. you dont have cats after your y pipe

Well ya...that'd make since. Still seems wierd he claims he can't do a true dual exhaust. I'd hate to spend the money and re-do my whole exhaust for a third time now.

yea i would seriously go back to him and put your truck up on the lift and SHOW him how easy it is to do true duals and where to cut the pipes. its sad you the customer has to tell the exhaust guy how to make somethin work...

Yep. Your most certainly correct. It comes off the manifolds into a 90 degree cat(totaling 2), then into another cat (totalling 4) then into a big y pipe. The y pipe looks more like an lowercase h than a y but none the less a y pipe. Yeah Idk why he couldn't do it. I'd hate to take it to the other exhaust shop and spend literally double of what i could with the other guy. Decessions, Decessions.

Okay help me out. I'd really like to put headers on at some point so would it be easier to go ahead and get a true dual exhaust, or would it be just as easy to keep it how it is? I mean easier as in once i get headers which set-up would be less likely to need all re-piped.

i really dont know the right answer to that..id say just get what u want now bc not the whole thing is gonna have to be re-piped to get headers. prolly just from after the cats up towards the motor will be bc thats where the pipes really bend alot

Thats how i've been. Really 2 exhaust set-ups but on two different trucks. I had to replace pretty well the whole exhaust on my old truck because it was too rusted to weld new tips on there so i replace mufflers and back on that truck. Then this truck was completely stock, I've thrown a lot of money at it including my exhaust(first mod i did). Then when I put my 3in BL on i had to raise the pipes to make it look natural and i put 4in tips on when i did that too. So 3 different exhaust shop visits.

So I noticed you have the 10 series from flowmaster. How's that sound compared to the magnaflow race series?

I wouldn't know honestly. Ive never heard the mag race series in person like the FM race series. i just know the FM race series sounds awesome. and the FM is a heck of alot cheaper than magnaflows race series. I would not spend almost $200 on one muffler but hey thats me

Ya no kiddin. I spent $450 on an entire exhaust system from that guy, only one muffler( FM super 40). And if i do go true dual set-up, that $400 in mufflers alone. I'm thinkin its going to cost me $600+ to do this. I have the money to do it but like i said i'm moving into an appartment here before winter. Ah the choices of life haha.

Anyway to save some money do you think the exhaust shop can re-use all the pipes from the muffler back(talking a true dual set-up)? Or am I looking at new pipe, muffler, and tips ( the whole kabang)?
