need advice on what muffler to buy

i want to buy either a flowmaster or magnaflow muffler to put on my 09 f150 fx4. i want to a si/do muffler. i want a nice deep rumble that wont drone to much. i can handle a little drone but not alot. i have read quite a bit on this forum about mufflers and the more i read the more indecisive i get. i think i want the flowmaster 40. is there a difference in the super 44 and the 40? or are they virtually the same? any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you go with either of those Flowmasters, you'll have a ton of drone, especially at the 1800 RPM range. It will be loud and obnoxious at that RPM. Magnaflows on the other hand don't have nearly as much drone. Sure there's a little bit, but it's not even comparable to the Flowmasters.

if you would consider a si/so, and want a good rumble throughout the entire rpm band, and nasty loud at WOT, look into the Borla XR-1, I switched from dual super 40's to a single Borla XR-1 and the Borla in my opinion beats it on sound and volume, not knocking the super 40's, I just wanted something a bit louder and I am happy with what I got running now.

It depends on your perception of loud. Since you are considering the 44 or super 40 in loudness, I would suggest the magnaflow 14" si/do or maybe even try the 11" si/so with a Y pipe to make it a si/do. They will be a bit quieter at cruise but under WOT they will be only a tad quieter. The 11" may be just as loud. I have the 14" and there is a video in my sig of idleing. Soon I hope to get more vids during acceleration, cruising ect. It's part # 12198 for the 14" si/do. I have it and am very happy. I think Maggies sound cleaner and are deeper. Less rasp than flowmasters

a si/do flowmaster will not have an enormous amnt of drone its verry bearable. ive had a 50 and 40 and they werent loud enough for me.

If you go Flowmaster, go Super 44. The Super 44s case is 1 inch thinner than the basic 40 Delta case and is less restricted due to a better designed chambers and less baffle plates.

The Magnaflow 14" SI/DO would be your best bet for Magnaflow.

I put a 40 on my '02 FX4 4.6 liter and it almost made me hate the truck. The drone at 1800 to about 2400 rpm was tooth-rattling. It did sound very good when not in that range, especially from outside the truck. I've "grown up" more now, 2 trucks later, and now I like a quieter muffler with a more pleasing tone rather than just aggressive "Hey everybody, look at me!!!" noise.

muffler

thanks for all the replies. i just cant make up my mind. i want to put an exhaust on my truck in the next two weeks or so. i just dont want to make the wrong choice. i think i am leaning towards the maggie 14" si/do. i like the low, deep rumble of the magnaflow. i had a 50 series flowmaster muffler on my last truck and it was barely louder than stock. can anyone tell me if the 14" maggie will be louder than the 50 series flowmaster. there is so much i am learning about exhausts. i appreciate all the info you guys are giving me.

The 11" is louder than the 14" however I am not totally positive how much louder. I am going to take an educated guess and say about 15% louder. Darren will chime in I'm sure. If you are looking for a deep, clean sounding muffler that is pretty loud on acceleration and has a nice rumble on cruise then I highly recommend the 14" si/do. I was in the same situation as you man. Darren could probably tell you how many questions I asked. Put it this way, I felt bad constantly asking questions. I had people say super 40, super 44, true duals, ect. I love the sound of those muffler outside, but the big issue is, how LOUD do you want to be able to hear it inside. I love exhaust tones, honestly almost as much as listening to music but I don't want to hear it droning in the cab on the highway, it's just annoying If you listen to Darren's video the "After installation one" (still had stock cats at the time) or something like that I forget the name, you'll see a comment and I asked how much quieter the 14" si/do would be. He said it would be close, maybe 15% queiter and that made me go with it. Hope that helps any, just trying to be a bit specific for ya
